UCCS Spoils Cowgirls' Conference Opener

Autumn Woods
Box Score The NMHU Cowgirls Soccer team lost their first conference game of the season on the road against the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs, on 9/14.  The Mountain Lions scored their first goal from a penalty kick in the 18th minute.  UCCS struck again in the first half, netting their second goal of the game in the 30th minute.  The Cowgirls took several shots on goal, including getting one goal taken away, but they were unable to find the net.  After the final whistle ended the game, it was the Mountain Lions who would come away with the 2-0 victory.  With the loss in Colorado Springs, Colo., the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Justin Wagar, fall to a 2-3 overall record and start RMAC play 0-1.

The Mountain Lions took advantage of a handball in the penalty box to get their first goal of the game.  UCCS's Agnes Arnadottir stepped up to take the penalty shot and buried the ball into the back of the net for her second goal of the season, giving the Mountain Lions the 1-0 lead.

UCCS extended their lead to 2-0 with 15 minutes left in the first half.  The Mountain Lions' Hannah Levett and Lindsay Birdseye worked the ball down the pitch and found Brooke Tominello with a pass.  Tominello took the shot and gave UCCS the two goal advantage before halftime.

Striker Marci Johnson posed the biggest scoring threat for the Cowgirls with two shots on goal.  The Cowgirls' Brooke D'Onofrio also had a shot on goal.

The teams played a physical game with 26 fouls between them.  The Cowgirls drew two yellow cards, one in each half of play.  The Mountain Lions had more shots on goal in the game, taking nine shots to the Cowgirls' five.

Coach Wagar was happy with the Cowgirls' effort in the second half.  He said “We gave up the penalty at the edge of the box in the first half and that affected how we played the rest of the game.  Then to have a goal taken away was tough, but the team responded well and played a good second half.”

The Cowgirls will continue conference play on Sunday, 9/16, as the travel to Alamosa, Colo., to take on their rivals the Grizzlies of Adams State College.  The Grizzlies are currently in third place in the RMAC, with a 1-0 conference record and 2-2 in overall play.  The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.  If you can't make it up to Alamosa to watch the Cowgirls in action, you can click HERE to follow the Live Stats.
