Box Score Alamosa, Colo. – The Cowgirl Basketball team wrapped up a tough RMAC road-trip with a 77-70 loss to the Grizzlies of Adams State University on 1/12. With the loss the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, fall to a 3-7 record in the RMAC and 3-11 in overall play.
The game at Plachy Hall followed a familiar pattern, as the Cowgirls gave up an early lead and played from behind for the majority of the game. Adams State took control of the contest five minutes into the first half and ran out to an 11 point lead (19-8) with 11:11 left in the half.
The teams exchanged scoring runs in the first half and the Cowgirls took advantage of the up and down play to close to within one point at the 3:12 mark. The Grizzlies scored before halftime and took a four point lead (35-31) into the locker-room.
Adams State started the second half with a 9-0 run to increase their lead to 13 points (44-31) with 17:11 remaining. The Cowgirls managed to regroup and were able to close to within seven point several times, but the Grizzlies responded each time to re-establish their double-digit advantage.
The Grizzlies were up by 12 points (67-55) with just 2:39 on the clock when the Cowgirls tried to close the gap.
Alyssa Lopez hit a three-point shot with only 46 seconds left to cut the lead down to five points (71-66), but that was as close as the Cowgirls would get. When the final buzzer sounded, Adams State had held out for the win on their home court, by the final score of 77-70.
The "Silent Assassin"
Alyssa Lopez returned to her high-scoring ways with a game high 25 points against the Grizzlies. Lopez played the full 40 minutes, adding five rebounds, five assists and two steals to her night's totals.
China Smith had sticky fingers against Adams State, grabbing five steals and five rebounds. Smith would add an assist and score 11 points before fouling out of the game.
Eboni Jacobs led the Cowgirls with six assists on Saturday night. She scored nine points, adding a steal and a blocked shot in her 31 minutes on the court.
The Cowgirls will return to conference action at home next weekend, 1/18, to host RMAC opponent Chadron State College. The Eagles are currently sitting in 12th place with a 2-7 conference record and 2-11 in overall play.
