Box Score Denver, Colo. – The NMHU Cowgirl Basketball team struggled on the road against the Roadrunners of Metropolitan State University of Denver, on 1/4, losing by the final score of 87-58. With the loss the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, fall to 3-4 in the RMAC and 3-8 in overall play.
The Cowgirls were able to keep pace early on with the more experienced Metro State team. The Roadrunners took the initial lead in the game, but they were unable to put any distance on the scoreboard.
Metro State was struggling to take control of the game and a long three-point shot by
Michelle Traynham tied the game up at 16 points apiece midway through the first half.
However, the Roadrunners finally gained their composure and seized the momentum in the game. They began to pass the ball around the perimeter with ease and the three-pointers started falling from everywhere. When the teams entered the locker-rooms for halftime, the Roadrunners were in command of the game 51-30.
Metro State continued their dominance in the second half despite the Cowgirls' best efforts. Personal fouls began to plague the Cowgirls and turnovers started to really take their toll. The Roadrunners disciplined team play and ball control were too much for the Cowgirls to overcome. When the final buzzer sounded, the Roadrunners were victorious on their home court by the final score of 87-58.
Alyssa Lopez was the top performer for the Cowgirls against Metro State. Lopez took a little time to get started, but she soon became the Cowgirls only real threat on the court. She scored 21 points in her 37 minutes on the court, including a lights-out 5-5 shooting performance from beyond the three-point line.
Turnovers and personal fouls were debilitating to the Cowgirls' efforts against the Roadrunners. The Cowgirls turned the ball over 27 times, leading to 31 points for Metro State. Personal fouls hurt the Cowgirls especially in the front court where three of their post players fouled out of the contest.
The Cowgirls will look to regroup in their next conference game, on 1/5, as they visit the Rangers of Regis University in Denver, Colo. The Rangers are currently in sixth place in the RMAC with a 4-2 conference record and 5-5 in overall play. The game is set for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off time with the Cowboys game to follow soon after the completion of the women's game.
