Cowgirls Win Two at 2013 Desert Stinger Softball Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 Las Vegas, N.M. – The NMHU Cowgirl Softball team wrapped up their weekend appearance at the fourth annual Desert Stinger Softball Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev.  The Cowgirls played two games on Saturday, Feb. 9, and one game on Sunday, Feb. 10.  The finished the 2013 Desert Stinger Softball Tournament with a 2-3 record in their five games.  After their appearance at the tournament, the Cowgirls have a 4-5 record in the 2013 season.

On Feb. 9, the Cowgirls faced Notre Dame de Namur University and Northwest Nazarene University.  NDNU created an early lead and never looked back, beating the Cowgirls 14-1.  Against Northwest Nazarene, the Cowgirls put in a great effort but would lose 12-8.

The Cowgirls looked to wrap up their tournament appearance on a high note, on Sunday Feb. 10, against the Urban Knights of the Academy of Art University.  In this game, the Cowgirls began with a seven run lead in the first inning. They continued the good hitting and won the game 12-4. Head Coach Shellie Broyles was glad to see her team advance their overall record to 4-5.

NDNU 14 – NMHU 1

The NDNU Argonauts scored their first two runs in the top of the first inning. After gaining the lead, the Argonauts continued the scoring in every inning except the fourth.
Brittany Potter brought in the only run for the Cowgirls in the bottom of the fifth inning. The umpire called the game after five innings due to the eight run rule in collegiate softball.

NNU 12 – NMHU 8

The game between NNU and NMHU was so good that the two teams had to decide the winner in an extra inning.

The Crusaders started the game by scoring three runs in the first two innings, taking a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the second inning.

Down by three, the Cowgirls would enter the bottom of the second with the intention of climbing into the lead. Shelby Watts would be the Cowgirls' answer. She was able to hit a home run with her first at bat of the game. The scoring continued in the inning for the Cowgirls, with two RBIs brought in by Dominique Padilla. NMHU had tied the game up 3-3 at the end of the second inning.

NNU would regain the lead with a run in the top of the fourth inning and, after holding the Cowgirls scoreless in the bottom of the fourth, the Crusaders would extend their lead to 6-3 in the top of the fifth inning.

The Cowgirls felt the game slipping away, but made a comeback in the bottom of the sixth inning. They tied the game through a passionate team effort. Shelby Watts recorded another RBI, and Molly McDougall flied out bringing in a run. Going into the final inning the two teams were tied at 6-6.

The seventh inning consisted of great defensive stands by each team and they remained tied up at six points apiece, sending the game into extra innings.

NNU's offense was aided by the Cowgirls sloppy defense in the top of the eighth inning.  The Crusaders were able to score six runs, thanks to three Cowgirl errors, and took a 12-6 lead.

The Cowgirls would attempt to close the deficit once again. NMHU looked like they were about to close the scoring gap as they brought in two RBIs, but they were unable to generate any more runs.  The Crusaders won the game by the final score of 12-8.

Shelby Watts went 2-5 against the Crusaders.  She hit a home run and brought in two RBIs; this was the second home run of the tournament for Watts. 

NMHU 12 – AAU 4

NMHU played substantial defense in the top of the first inning, holding the Urban Knights scoreless. At the bottom of the first inning the Cowgirls would explode offensively, scoring seven runs.

Shelby Watts started the scoring with a grand slam home run.  Her four RBIs gave the Cowgirls an immediate boost and started a rally.  This was Shelby Watts' third home run of the tournament.  Tess Oliphant continued the Cowgirls' first inning onslaught with a three-run home run.  When the Urban Knights were finally able to end the first inning, the Cowgirls held a 7-0 lead.

Attempting to reclaim the lead, the Urban Knights would capitalize on the Cowgirls' poor defense in the top of the second inning.  They brought in four runs and reduced the Cowgirls' lead to 7-4.

In the bottom of third inning the Cowgirls picked up the scoring once again, taking advantage of three errors by the Urban Knights. Paige Medina sparked the third inning scoring with an RBI double.   The Cowgirls were able to generate three more runs in the inning and they had an 11-4 lead after three innings of play.

The Cowgirls scored one more run in the bottom of the fourth inning and they were able to keep AAU from scoring in the fifth inning.  They won the game 12-4 in five innings because of the eight run rule in collegiate softball.
