Box Score Las Vegas, N.M. – The NMHU Cowgirl Basketball team played the Western State Colorado University Mountaineers at home, on Feb. 16. The Cowgirls played an eventful game against the Mountaineers, but would fall short with a final score of 75-68. With the loss the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Tiffany Darling, fall to 4-15 in the RMAC and 4-19 in overall play.
WSCU and NMHU went head to head, matching every shot from beginning to end. Early in the first half the Cowgirls went up by four points. Although the Cowgirls' advantage was small, the Mountaineers could not gain the lead until the 13:13 mark of the first half.
The Cowgirls would regain the lead with a pair of free throws by
Alyssa Lopez, with 9:29 left in the first half. WSCU would go on to again, but Lopez would reclaim the lead by making a lay-up and a three pointer in back to back offensive plays and at the 6:47 mark of the first half the score was 24-20 in favor of the Cowgirls.
In the final minutes of the first half, the lead would change two more times. When the first half buzzer sounded, the Cowgirls were up 35-32.
The second half was just as competitive as the first. WSCU was able to regain their composure and jump out to a five-point lead with 15:45 to play in the second half, making the score 42-37.
Alyssa Lopez helped the Cowgirls fight back. She hit a big 3-pointer with 11:15 on the clock, making it a 50-47 lead.
NMHU held their lead until the 4:08 mark of the second half, when the Mountaineers went ahead with a 3-pointer (62-61).
The Cowgirls recaptured the lead (65-64) with 2:24 to play. At this point the Cowgirls wanted to run away with the victory, stretching their lead to 68-64 with just 1:41 left in the game.
WSCU continued to battle and they came back in the final minute with two free throws, taking the lead 69-68. The Mountaineers won the game with several more free throws in the last seconds and the final score was 75-68.
Alyssa Lopez finished the night with 35 points. She shot 10-24 from the field and 4-10 from beyond the three-point arc.
The Cowgirls honored senior
Ashley Zaragoza in their final home game of the 2013 season. The ceremony took place at halftime of the Cowboys' game, with Zaragoza receiving recognition for her contributions to Cowgirl Basketball.
The Cowgirls continue conference play, on Feb.22, against the Colorado School of Mines on road in Golden, Colo. The Orediggers are currently tied for sixth place in the RMAC, with a 10-9 conference record and 13-12 in overall play. The Cowgirls will try to break a six game losing streak against Colorado School of Mines.
