Box Score 2 Portales, N.M. – The NMHU Softball team captured a victory in both games of their double header against Eastern New Mexico University Zias, on Feb. 20. The Cowgirls won game one 8-2 and finished up with an 11-2 fifth inning victory in the second game of the day. With the wins the Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Shellie Broyles, improve to a 6-5 record in the 2013 season.
NMHU 8 – ENMU 2
The Zias started the scoring in game one with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning, taking an early 2-0 lead.
The Cowgirls rallied in the fourth inning, scoring eight runs.

Brittany Potter both drew walks to give the Cowgirls base-runners on first and second base. Then
Shelby Watts stepped up to the plate and blasted a monster three-run homerun over the left-field fence, giving the Cowgirls a 3-2 lead.
The Cowgirls gained momentum from Watts' home run and continued their scoring onslaught in the top of the fourth inning. When the final out was recorded in the inning, they had gone ahead 8-2.
Neither team would score again in the game.
Devon Paiz recorded the final out for the Cowgirls with a diving catch on a foul ball on the first base line.

Jessica Brink (4-2) completed the full seven innings from the pitcher's circle. She allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out three, facing 32 batters.
NMHU 11 – ENMU 2
The Cowgirls carried their momentum from game one over to the second game of the day. They started the scoring from the get go. They racked up seven runs on four hits and took advantage of a Zia error, to take a 7-0 lead.
The Cowgirls would add to their lead in the top of the third inning, scoring two more runs. The Zias answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning and the score was now 9-2 after three innings of play.
The Cowgirls helped their cause again in the top of the fifth inning with two more runs.

The Zias were unable to get any runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and the Cowgirls would take the 11-2 victory after five innings of play, due to collegiate softball's eight run rule.
Erica Wieck (2-1) pitched the full five innings against the Zias. She faced 24 batters in the game, allowing two runs on two hits (only one earned run) and struck out four batters.
Shelby Watts was the Cowgirls' offensive leader against the Zias. She went 5-8 in the series, with two runs scored and six RBIs. Her three-run home run in the first game started a Cowgirl scoring blitz that carried them to victory in both games.
The Cowgirls will face their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponent on Feb. 23, when they host the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University, in Las Vegas, N.M. The Mavericks are 2-4 so far in the young 2013 season. The teams will play in two double headers on Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 23-24). The first pitch on Saturday is set for 11:00 a.m. and at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday. The second game of each double header will begin approximately 30 minutes after the first game's completion. Come on out to Brandt Field and support your Cowgirls as they begin RMAC play in the 2013 season.
