Cowgirls Grab a Win Against Mustangs

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Silver City, N.M. – On Mar. 16 the Cowgirls played a double header against the Western New Mexico University Mustangs. The Cowgirls won their first game against the Mustangs 4-2. In the second game, the Cowgirls fell behind and lost to the Mustangs 12-3. Head Coach Shellie Broyles led her team through a win and a loss today but the Cowgirls will have two more opportunities against the WNMU tomorrow, Mar. 17. Presently their record is 10-16-1 overall and 3-10-1 in conference play.

NMHU 4 - WNMU 2
The first three innings went scoreless. Each team would attempt to cash in scores but there were only three hits in total. The Cowgirls had two hits and the Mustangs had one.

Until the top of the fourth inning the game was scoreless. The Cowgirls made the first score of the game when a Mustang pitching error allowed Brittany Potter to cross the plate. In the middle of the fourth inning the score was 1-0.

In the bottom of the fourth inning WNMU took the lead with two runs. The lead was 2-1 with the Mustangs on top.

The Cowgirls caused some trouble for the Mustangs in the sixth inning when they took the lead with two runs. With two men on base, Jessica Brink hit two RBIs with a single to right field. In the middle of the sixth inning the score was 4-2.

The Mustangs were unable to score in the final innings.

Brink brought in the last two runs of the game with her single to right field. In addition to her game-winning hit Jessica Brink (7-8) pitched the entire game. In her win, the Cowgirl allowed only five hits for two runs and struck out four batters.

WNMU 12 - NMHU 3

NMHU started the scoring in the top of the first inning but WNMU tied it up later that inning. At the top of the second inning the score was 1-1.

The next score of the game would not come until the third inning when Brittany Potter would hit a homerun to center field for the Cowgirls. The Cowgirls reclaimed the lead (2-1) in the top of the third inning.

The Mustangs went ahead of the Cowgirls when they scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning (3-2).

In the fourth inning the score would be tied again when the Cowgirls would score another run. Molly McDougall crossed the plate after Tess Oliphant hit a single into left-center field. At the middle of the fourth inning the score was 3-3.
WNMU took control in the bottom of the fourth. With six hits the Mustangs were able to cash in nine runs. The Cowgirls went into the bottom of the fourth inning tied but left the inning with a nine run deficit. Closing the fourth inning the Mustangs clamed a 12-3 lead over the Cowgirls.

Because the Cowgirls were unable to score in the top of the fifth inning the Mustangs won by eight-run rule.

The Cowgirls will continue their weekend series against Western New Mexico University in Silver City, N.M. The two teams will face each other in a double header on Mar. 17.
