Box Score 2 Silver City, N.M. – The Cowgirls ended their four-game series against the Western New Mexico University Mustangs this weekend, Mar. 17. WNMU outscored the Cowgirls in each game, handing the Cowgirls two more losses. The score for the first game was 4-1, and the second game was 13-4. These two losses give the Cowgirls a 10-8-1 overall record and a 3-12-1 conference record.
WNMU 4 – NMHU 1
The Mustangs scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning (1-0) with a double to left field.
The Cowgirls found no luck on the offense. They made three hits before the middle of the third inning and could not score a run.
In the fourth inning the Mustangs began to pull away from the Cowgirls with two runs, making the score 3-0.
The two teams hit eight runs each throughout the game, unfortunately the Cowgirls were unable to score any runs until the seventh inning.
In the seventh inning with two outs,
Erica Wieck hit a double into center field for one RBI. After the final out, the Cowgirls would take the loss 4-1.
WNMU 13 – NMHU 4
In the second game, NMHU fell behind early again until they tied the game 2-2 in the top of the second.
Tess Oliphant hit a single, and advanced to second base through a Mustangs' fielding error. The play allowed two runs to score. At the middle of the second inning the score was 2-2.
By the top of the fifth inning, the Cowgirls' deficit was 4-2.
NMHU would rally to tie the game up 4-4 in the top of the fifth inning. With bases loaded,
Dominique Padilla hit a double into left field for two RBIs.
The Cowgirls were unable to contain the Mustangs' hitting in the fifth inning. WNMU scored nine runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Cowgirls would fall to the Mustangs under the eight run rule.
The final score was 13-4 Mustangs.
The Cowgirls will continue Conference play this weekend against the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs in Colorado Springs, Colo. The two teams will face each other in two double headers on Mar. 23 and Mar. 24. The first game starts at 12:00 p.m. and the second game starts at 2:00 p.m. On the second day, the first game starts at 11:00 a.m. and the second game starts at 1:00 p.m. If you can't make it to the game in Colorado Springs, you can click
