Cowgirls Fall to Mustangs in Final Game of 2012-13 Season

Box Score Silver City, N.M. – The NMHU Women's Basketball team played against the Western New Mexico University Mustangs on Mar. 2, for the final game of the 2012-13 season. The outcome was 70-67 in favor of the Mustangs. Under Head Coach Tiffany Darling, the Cowgirls lower their record to 4-18 in conference play and 4-22 in overall play. 

The Cowgirls scored the first four points of the game, they were winning at the 17:39 point of the first half 4-0. The four point lead would change in favor of the Mustangs when they jumped ahead by six points (13-7) at the 11:17 mark of the first half.

Indre Mikelenaite helped tie the game up 13-13 by the 9:48 mark of the first half. She assisted the Cowgirls by closing the six point deficit with two jump shots inside the paint.

The Cowgirls would attempt to obtain a lead, but could not pass the Mustangs. By the end of the first half the Cowgirls were losing 39-23.

The Mustangs' lead had reached 23 points (48-25) by the 16:28 mark of the second half.  After trailing by 23 points, the Cowgirls got a hold of their offense. Going on a 14-0 run, the Cowgirls were able to cut the lead to only nine points.

Cwynnci Lobaugh hit two big three pointers during the Cowgirls' fourteen-point run. The score was 48-39 with 12:27 left to play.

The Mustang lead continued to decrease as the Cowgirls kept scoring points through the efforts of Alyssa Lopez and Cwynnci Lobaugh. With 6:27 to play in the game, the score was 55-53.

Lopez continued to find work until the final seconds of the game. She was able to score six of NMHU's last ten points. Through her efforts, the Cowgirls were able to cut the Mustangs' lead to one point (68-67) with 11 seconds left to play.

The Mustangs once again extended their lead, going up by three points (70-67) with a pair of free throws. With just two seconds left to play, Alyssa Lopez attempted to tie the game, but her shot was blocked by a Mustang defender.

The final score was 70-67 in favor of Western New Mexico University.

Alyssa Lopez finished the game with 15 points. Adding to her season total, Lopez led the Cowgirls in scoring on the season with 450 points.

The NMHU Cowgirls finished their season with a 4-18 conference record and 4-22 overall record. The Cowgirls finished in last place in the RMAC standings and missed out on the conference post-season tournament. Despite their struggles in the 2012-13 season, the Cowgirls had star shooting guard Alyssa Lopez selected as the RMAC Academic Player of the Year.
