Cowgirls Get Back-to-Back Wins in RMAC Pod Play

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Las Vegas, N.M. – On Friday, March 29, 2013 the NMHU Cowgirls went up against Chadron State College and Black Hills State University in pod-play. Pod-play is a weekend series between three teams. Each team will face each other twice on the weekend. The Cowgirls played the Chadron State College Eagles in an exciting 3-2 win. In the second game, the Cowgirls beat the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets 12-2 in five innings. The Cowgirls, under Head Coach Shellie Broyles, succeeded in their two-game competition on Friday. With the wins the Cowgirls advance to 12-21-1 in overall play and 5-15-1 in the RMAC.

NMHU 3 - CSC 2
In the morning game NMHU and CSC played a tight one. In the first inning, the two teams went scoreless.

Dominique Padilla hit a home run to center field in her first at bat in the second inning. The home run put the Cowgirls up 1-0 in the second inning.

The Eagles scored a run in the top of the third inning and tied the game 1-1.

The Cowgirls created an offensive attack when they made four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Through the four hits, the Cowgirls cashed in two RBIs for the lead (3-1). Shelby Watts hit a two run home run bringing Erica Wieck.

The Eagles attempted to gain the lead, but the Cowgirls only allowed one more run in the sixth inning. At the middle of the sixth inning the score was 3-2.

Each team went scoreless through the last inning and a half. The final score was 3-2 in favor of the Cowgirls.

Jessica Brink started and finished the game. In her seven inning victory, the Cowgirl from Tucson, Ariz. allowed six hits and four runs. Her current record is 8-11.

NMHU 12 -BHSU 2
In the Cowgirls' second game, NMHU faced the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets.

In the bottom of the first inning the Cowgirls scored four runs. Lynnsey Johnson advanced the bases to cross the plate after reaching base on a wild pitch by the Yellow Jackets (1-0). Erica Wieck also scored a run after Brittany Potter's sacrifice fly out (2-0).

The Cowgirls continued the early game dominance with a two-run single by Jessica Brink. At the end of the first inning the score was 4-0.

NMHU continued their commanding offense in the following inning. The Cowgirls racked up another four runs in the bottom of the second inning. The lead was extended with another RBI and a run scored through a passed ball. With two outs, Dominique Padilla hit a two-run home run to left field. At the end of the bottom of the second inning, the Cowgirls were winning 8-0.

In the third inning the Yellow Jackets scored two runs to cut their deficit to six runs (8-2).

The Cowgirls once again extended their lead in the third inning. NMHU capitalized on an error by BHSU to score two runs (10-2). Lynnsey Johnson scored the Cowgirls next run. At the end of the third inning the score was 11-2.

The Cowgirls scored their final run in the fourth inning making the score 12-2. The lead was out of reach for the Yellow Jackets.

In the fifth and final inning, Cowgirls' starting pitcher Erica Wieck put the Yellow Jackets away for the win. The final score was 12-2 in favor of the Cowgirls.

Erica Wieck bettered her record with the 12-2 win over BHSU. Her record is now 4-9. In the victory, Wieck allowed three hits for two runs and had five strike outs.

The Cowgirls' record is now 12-21-1 in overall play and 5-15-1 in conference.
