Box Score 2 Las Vegas, N.M. – On Mar. 30 the Cowgirls went up against the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets and the Chadron State College Eagles for the second day of RMAC Pod Play. Pod Play is a three-team series in which each team plays each other twice.
The Cowgirls were the victors in the first game against BHSU (7-2). In the second game against the Eagles, the Cowgirls took control of the game early, for a 7-3 win. Led by Shellie Broyles, the Cowgirls advance their record to 14-21-1 in overall play and 7-15-1in the RMAC.
NMHU 7 – BHSU 2
Erica Wieck, the starting pitcher for the Cowgirls made a defensive stand by not allowing one hit in the first three innings. Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets' defense stopped the Cowgirls from scoring first.
In the fourth inning BHSU gained the first lead when a Yellow Jacket crossed the plate for an unearned run (1-0).
The Cowgirls tied up the game in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Molly McDougall scored a run when
Dominique Padilla hit a double.
BHSU reclaimed the lead in the fifth inning when the Yellow Jackets capitalized on a Cowgirl error. The Yellow Jackets held a one run lead in the middle of the fifth inning (2-1).
In the bottom of the fifth inning the Cowgirls caught fire, scoring six runs off of six hits.
Claire Hoy started the fifth inning rally when she crossed the plate on a single by
Erica Wieck. Then Wieck scored a run on a
Brittany Potter double.
With Potter on second base,
Shelby Watts stepped to the batter's box. On the first pitch Watts slugged a home run to center field. The two run home run extended the Cowgirls' lead further (6-2).
The Cowgirls scored another run before the inning was over, making the score 7-2 at the end of the fifth inning.
In the final inning and a half,
Erica Wieck allowed two hits and prevented the Yellow Jackets from scoring more runs.
The Cowgirls stood victors after seven innings by outscoring the Yellow Jackets 7-2.
Erica Wieck pitched the entire seven innings in her second win of the weekend. Wieck allowed five hits for two runs, and struck out nine batters, while improving her record to 5-9.
NMHU 7 – CSC 3
In the second game the Cowgirls went up against the CSC Eagles.
The two teams went scoreless through the first inning.
In the bottom of the second inning the Cowgirls started the game's scoring.
Tess Oliphant hit a solo homerun for the Cowgirls' first lead of the game (1-0). With two men on base,
Lynnsey Johnson drove in the Cowgirls' second run with an infield hit to the Eagle's shortstop. The run brought in by Johnson gave the Cowgirls a 2-0 lead going into the third inning.
In the top of the third inning the Eagles scored a run (2-1) through two hits, a triple and a single.
The Cowgirls continued hitting in the bottom of the third inning. They scored three runs off of three hits.
Tess Oliphant's sacrifice fly out brought in
Brittany Potter to extend the lead 3-1. With two outs in the inning, the Cowgirls'
Devon Paiz hit a double for a two run score. At the end of the third inning the Eagles' deficit was 5-1.
Each team tightened up their defense for the next two innings and a half. The Eagles then broke down in the sixth inning, when the Cowgirls scored two more runs. With the two insurance runs, the Cowgirls proved to be the better team. The lead became out of reach for the Eagles.
At the final out of the final inning, the Cowgirls were pronounced winners of the game (7-3).
Jessica Brink threw five of the seven innings for the Cowgirls from the pitcher's circle and was awarded the victory. With her win the Cowgirl enhances her record to 9-11.
