Cowgirls Prepare for Senior Day

Las Vegas, N.M. – The NMHU Cowgirl Softball team is hosting the final home series of the 2013 season this coming weekend, Apr. 20-21.  The Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners will be making the trip to Las Vegas to face the Cowgirls in two double headers.   The Cowgirls will be celebrating “Senior Day” on Sunday (Apr. 21) to honor the six departing seniors for their contributions to the NMHU Softball program.

The six seniors playing in the final home games of their collegiate career are: Shelby Watts, Erica Wieck, Brittany Potter, Tess Oliphant, Molly McDougall, and Krista Mattice.

Watts Senior Day

Shelby Watts is leading the Cowgirls in most offensive categories this season.  The Oroville, Calif. native is currently leading the RMAC and tied for tenth place in NCAA DII with 13 home runs.  She has produced 43 RBIs, 31 runs scored, 11 doubles, and is hitting for a .367 average in 2013.  Watts has significantly increased her production from the 2012 season and has become the Cowgirls main offensive threat this year.

Wieck Senior Day

Erica Wieck is the Cowgirls' main dual-threat in 2013, having established herself in both the pitcher's circle and in the outfield.  Wieck is one of the Cowgirls' starting pitchers, amassing a record of 5-14 with a 5.52 ERA and 76 strikeouts.  The Chico, Calif. native has performed well in the left field for the Cowgirls as well.  She has a .294 batting average with 19 runs scored, 17 RBIs, and 11 doubles from the lead-off spot this year.

Potter Senior Day

Brittany Potter was selected to the 2013 RMAC Preseason All-Conference team.  Although Potter has struggled to repeat her 2012 team-leading 12 home runs, she remains one of the best offensive players for the Cowgirls.  The shortstop from Quincy, Calif. is maintaining a .349 batting average this year, with 24 runs scored, 20 RBIs, eight doubles, and a .500 slugging percentage.  Potter leads the Cowgirls with 18 multiple-hit games.

Oliphant Senior Day

Tess Oliphant is the Cowgirls' starting right fielder.  The native of Sparks, Nev. is ranked second in most offensive categories for the Cowgirls, including home runs (9), RBIs (29), runs scored (24), slugging percentage (.615), and doubles (10).

McDougall Senior Day

Molly McDougall has been the Cowgirls' utility infielder this season, playing both third base and first base.  She is also one of the Cowgirls' top offensive performers from the fifth spot in the lineup.   The native of Long Beach, Calif. has a .298 batting average in 2013, with 20 runs scored, 15 RBIs, four doubles, four stolen bases, and one home run.

Mattice Senior Day Story1

Unfortunately senior Krista Mattice has been unable to play this season due to a previous injury, but the former Cowgirl infielder has continued to assist the team during the 2013 season.  The Carson City, Nev. native finished the 2012 season with a .284 batting average, with 20 runs scored, 11 RBIs, three doubles, and a triple.

These Cowgirls will receive special recognition at a ceremony on Sunday (Apr. 21) during the break between games.  The first game on Sunday is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. with the second game to follow after the completion of the Senior Day festivities.

NMHU Athletics thanks these six student-athletes for their dedication and contribution to the Cowgirl Softball program and wishes them the best of luck in their future endeavors.
