Box Score 2 Las Vegas, N.M. - NMHU Softball went up against the Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners, on Apr.20, in a double header. The Cowgirls fell behind early in the first game, but were able to rally and take control of the game to win 12-5. In the second game, the Cowgirls and Roadrunners exchanged leads but the Cowgirls outscored them, 9-8, for their second win of the day. With the two wins under Head Coach Shellie Broyles, the Cowgirls advance to 17-30-1 in overall play and 9-23-1 in the RMAC.
NMHU 12 - MSU 5
Erica Wieck, the starting Cowgirl pitcher, ran into some trouble early in the game when the bases were loaded and no outs. The Roadrunners brought in two runs with a hit to center field and gained the first lead of the game (2-0) in the top of the first inning.
Wieck started the Cowgirls' hitting in the bottom of the first inning with a double to left field. With runners on the corners,
Shelby Watts hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Wieck for the Cowgirls' first run of the game.
Later that inning, the Cowgirls scored another run. At the end of the first inning the score was 2-2.
The Cowgirls faced another scare in the second inning when the Roadrunners threatened to score with the bases loaded. Thanks to a put out at home plate and a strike out, NMHU was able to escape the second inning with no runs scored by the Roadrunners.
In the bottom of the second inning,
Erica Wieck slammed a single into left field to put the Cowgirls in scoring position with runners at first and third base. The Cowgirls were able to execute a score with a sacrifice fly out (3-2).
With two men on base
Brittany Potter stepped up to the plate to knock her sixth home run of the season. The three-run home run put the Cowgirls up 6-3 in the second inning. After finding another hit, the Cowgirls'
Molly McDougall hit a two-run home run to push the lead to 8-2.
Jessica Brink got a piece of the action when she hit a solo home run to further the lead 9-2, later in the second inning. One more run was brought in when
Tess Oliphant crossed home plate through a Roadrunner error.
The Cowgirls scored eight runs with seven hits in the bottom of the second inning. At the beginning of the third inning the score was 10-2 Cowgirls.
With a resilient defense, the Cowgirls got away from another potential Roadrunner score in the top of the third inning.
Jessica Brink entered the game to pitch in the fourth inning.
After scoring one run in the fourth inning, the Roadrunners trailed 10-3.
Erica Wieck drove in two insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for the Cowgirls, pushing the lead to 12-3.
The Roadrunners cut the lead once again in the fifth inning when they scored two runs, making the score 12-5.
In the bottom of the fifth inning the Cowgirls would attempt to finish the game through the eight-run rule, but they were unable to cash in on any runs.
Erica Wieck re-entered the game as pitcher in an attempt to shut MSU out from any more runs.
The Roadrunners could not catch up. The Cowgirls' lead was out of reach. The final score was 12-5.
NMHU 9 - MSU 8
In the second game the first score (1-0) came in the bottom of the first inning when Cowgirl
Erica Wieck crossed the plate through
Brittany Potter' s double to center field. The Cowgirls would score two more runs in the inning to take a 3-0 lead.
The Roadrunners got their first score when a double to right field brought in a runner from third base. NMHU would stop any more runs and get out of the top of the second inning on top 3-1.
The second and third inning saw sufficient defense and no scores.
In the fourth inning, the Cowgirls'
Dominique Padilla hit a single in to left field to stretch the lead 4-1.
The Roadrunners kicked up their offense in the fifth inning by loading up the bases. With a ground ball to left field MSU scored one run (4-2). The next score happened with another hit to left field (4-3). The Cowgirls' pitching ran into trouble and the Roadrunners continued to rally to gain an 8-4 lead.
Molly McDougall stepped up to the plate for the Cowgirls in the fifth inning with one runner on base. She smashed a home run into left field for the two-run score (8-6).
In the following inning, the Cowgirls got two hits to get runners on first and third base. When
Dominique Padilla stepped up to the plate she knocked a three-run home run into left field for the one-run lead (9-8).
Jessica Brink entered the game in relief of
Erica Wieck and contained the Roadrunners from more scores. The final score was 9-8 in favor of the Cowgirls.
The Cowgirls will host Metropolitan State University of Denver again, on Apr. 21, in their final Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference home series of the year. The two teams will play another double header.
On Sunday the Cowgirls will be celebrating Senior Day and honoring their six senior student-athletes as they play in their final home games. The first game will start at 11:00 a.m. and the second game is at 1:00 p.m. The Cowgirls will hold their Senior Day ceremony during the break between games.
