Cowgirls Celebrate Senior Day with DH Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Las Vegas, N.M. – The NMHU Cowgirls played the Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners in a double header on Apr. 21.  Since it was the final home stand for the Cowgirls this season, NMHU honored their seniors with Senior Day.  The Cowgirls celebrated their seniors before the first pitch of the second game.  Tess Oliphant, Shelby Watts, Erica Wieck, Molly McDougall, Brittany Potter, and Krista Mattice were the seniors honored at today's game.

The Cowgirls earned a two-game split.  They won the first game 3-2. In the second game, the Roadrunners outscored the Cowgirls 8-5.  Led by Head Coach Shellie Broyles, the Cowgirls record is now 18-31-1 overall and 10-24-1 in conference.

NMHU 3 – MSUD 2
The Cowgirls went down early when the Roadrunners cashed in their first run of the day in the top of the first inning (1-0).  That lead would stand until the fourth inning when the Roadrunners stretched it with another run (2-0).

The Cowgirls were held from scoring any runs in the first five innings but found their scoring rhythm in the sixth inning.  Dominique Padilla hit a single to the left side and Claire Hoy crossed the plate for their first score (2-1).

In the same inning, Erica Wieck tied up the game when she brought in another run with a double (2-2). The scoring continued for the Cowgirls when Devon Paiz hit a sacrifice fly to bring in the final run of the inning (3-2).

In the sixth inning the Cowgirls cashed in three runs with four hits.

In the final inning, the Cowgirls needed a defensive stand in order to win the game.  The Cowgirls' starting pitcher Erica Wieck would finish the game by only allowing one hit in the seventh inning.  The final score was 3-2 in favor of the Cowgirls.

Devon Paiz went 2-3 at the plate and had one RBI. Her sacrifice fly drove in the winning run.

Erica Wieck pitched a complete seven innings for the Cowgirls. Her win advances her record to 7-14.

MSUD 8 – NMHU 5
No runs were scored in the first inning.  The Roadrunners had a couple of hits in the second inning and were able to bring in three runners for the early game lead (3-0).

The Cowgirls took the batter's box in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game 3-3.  The scoring began when Lynnsey Johnson hit a single to center field to bring in a runner from third base.  Another single by the Cowgirls scored their second run.  The third run was scored when the Roadrunners' pitcher threw a wild pitch, allowing Tess Oliphant to cross the plate.

In the third inning, the Roadrunners reclaimed the lead with two runs off of two hits.  The score was 5-3 at the end of the third inning.

The Roadrunners scored three more runs in the fifth inning to take an 8-3 lead.

The Cowgirls attempted to get back into the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Brittany Potter scored a run on a passed ball.  Pinch running for Shelby Watts, Claire Hoy crossed the plate after a Cowgirls' single.  The two runs cut the Roadrunners lead to 8-5 in the fifth inning.

On the Cowgirls next opportunity to hit, in the sixth inning, the Cowgirls would attempt to tie or gain the lead.  They hit well in the inning but were unable to cash in more runs.  In the seventh inning, the Cowgirls were only allowed one hit and could not turn it into a score.

Jessica Brink took the loss as the Cowgirls' starting pitcher. Her current record is 11-16.

The Cowgirls will travel to Denver, Colo. to play against Regis University, on Apr.  27-28. The two double headers will be the final Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season series of the year for the Cowgirls.
