Cowgirls Sweep Day One Action Against Rangers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Denver, Colo. – The Cowgirls went on the road to face the Regis University Rangers in a double header on Saturday Apr. 27. Outscoring the Rangers in two straight games, the Cowgirls walked off the field victors. With the two wins Shellie Broyles and the Cowgirls advance their record to 20-31-1 in overall play and 12-24-1 in the RMAC.

NMHU 5 – RU 4
In the first inning the Cowgirls scored one run for the first lead of the game (1-0). The Cowgirls scored the run when Erica Wieck crossed the plate through a fielding error by RU.

The lead would stand until the second inning when the Cowgirls furthered their lead with a pair of runs. Erica Wieck would score her second run of the game off of a Brittany Potter single into left field making the score 2-0. Andrea Gutierrez would score the next run when Shelby Watts hit a double into left field. NMHU would hold a 3-0 lead entering the bottom of the second inning.

RU answered with a run in the bottom of the second inning (3-1). The Rangers hit a single and brought in a runner from third base.

The lead was cut to one in the bottom of the fourth inning when the Cowgirls committed an error that allowed one run to cross the plate (3-2).

The Cowgirls went on a hitting drought for two innings until Shelby Watts stepped into the batters' box in the fifth inning. Watts hit a home run which extended the Cowgirls' lead to 4-2.

The sixth and the seventh inning would not see a Cowgirl hit. RU would seize the opportunity to tie in the seventh inning and score two runs (4-4).  A double into center field would score a runner on third base. After giving up a walk, the Cowgirls faced a batter with two runners on the corners and two outs. The Rangers cashed in the tying run with a single to left field.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Cowgirls were unable to score a run. Fortunately, the Rangers were kept from scoring any runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

NMHU would score the winning run in the ninth inning. Dominique Padilla reached base on a single to right field. An error by the Rangers would allow Padilla to take third base. Andrea Gutierrez would hit a sacrifice fly to allow Padilla to cross home plate.

The Rangers were held from scoring in the bottom of the ninth.

Erica Wieck would pitch nine innings for her eighth win of the season. Wieck had five strikeouts and allowed only seven hits. Her current record is 8-14.

Shelby Watts went 2-3 at the plate in the game. Including her one-run home run, the senior from Oroville, Calif. had two RBIs, and one run scored.

NMHU 6 – RU 4
NMHU started off the game strong bringing in five runs in the first inning (5-0). Shelby Watts hit a single up the middle for an RBI. Later in the inning, Jessica Brink would hit a single to left field for a two-run score. The hitting frenzy continued when Tess Oliphant hit a double into right field for another run scored. Brink would cross home plate as well. She was brought in by Dominique Padilla's single into left field.

The score was 5-0 in the middle of the first inning.

RU would answer with a substantial effort by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The score was 5-3 going into the second inning.

RU continued to press on the Cowgirls' lead in the following inning. In the bottom of the second inning the Rangers scored one run making the score 5-4.

Both teams held up defensively in the fourth and fifth inning.

In the sixth inning, the Cowgirls would add to their lead when Dominique Padilla would reach first base on a fielder's choice, this allowed Molly McDougall to cross the plate for the 6-4 lead.

Both teams would fail to score again, securing the victory for NMHU (6-4).

Jessica Brink started for the Cowgirls and came up with the win.

Erica Wieck relieved Brink in the third inning and was awarded the save.

Shelby Watts continued her great day of hitting in the second game when she went 2-4 from the batter's box, scoring one run and bringing home two runners.

Jessica Brink also hit well. She was 2-4 at plate, scoring one run and two RBIs.

The Cowgirls will stay in Denver, Colo. to play against Regis University, on Apr. 28.
