Box Score 2 Las Vegas, N.M. – On Wednesday, Apr. 3, the Cowgirls went up against the Eastern New Mexico University Zias in a non-conference double header. The Cowgirls split the day with the Zias by winning the first game, and losing the second. In the First game, the Cowgirls held on to a second inning lead by beating the Zia 7-6. The Zias won the second game 8-6. With the double-header split, Head Coach Shellie Broyles and the Cowgirls are now 15-22-1 in overall play and remain 7-15-1 in the RMAC.
NMHU 7 – ENMU 6
The Zias jumped ahead of the Cowgirls 2-0 by scoring a run in the first and second inning.
In the third inning, the Cowgirls looked to heavy-hitter
Tess Oliphant for a score. The Cowgirl was able to hit a homerun to cut the lead down 2-1.
Lynnsey Johnson added on to the Cowgirls' score when she homered down the left field line for two more runs.
The Cowgirls claimed a 3-2 lead at the end of the second inning.
ENMU tied the game up 3-3 in the third inning with a sacrifice fly out to left field.
NMHU rallied in the bottom of the third inning.
Shelby Watts hit a double into center field and scored a run when
Dominique Padilla hit a single.
The Cowgirls continued to score when
Tess Oliphant hit her second ball of the day. Going two for three from the dish, Oliphant was able to drive in her second and third RBI with a double down the left field line.
Another run was scored when Oliphant was brought home. By the end of the third inning the score was 7-3.
Jessica Brink was called to the pitching circle in the fourth inning. Despite giving up three runs, the Cowgirl pitcher was able to hold off the Zias for the win (7-6).
Brink pitched four innings in her 7-6 victory.
ENMU 8 – NMHU 6
The Scoring began in the second inning when the Zias scored on a passed ball. At the top of the second inning the score was 1-0.
NMHU struggled to hit the ball in the first and second innings. With no runs scored the Cowgirls fell behind.
In the third inning the Zias extended their lead to 4-0.
The Cowgirls attempted to get back into the game when they scored their first run in the bottom of the third inning.
Andrea Gutierrez crossed the plate when
Erica Wieck hit a double. The score was 4-1 after three innings.
In the fourth inning the Zias pressed on by scoring another run (5-1).
The Cowgirls could not contain the Zias. By the middle of the fifth inning the Zias' lead was 8-3.
In an attempt to finally get the lead, the Cowgirls looked to one of their leading hitters.
Shelby Watts stepped to the plate with two runners on base. The Oroville, Calif. native slammed a home run directly into the scoreboard in center field. With the three-run home run the Cowgirls closed the deficit to 8-6.
The Cowgirls looked as if they were on the verge of a comeback, but they could not cash in any more runs.
NMHU battled the ENMU pitcher in the final innings, but the Zias were able to keep the lead for the win 8-6.
The Cowgirls play against Colorado State University of Pueblo on Friday, Apr. 6, and Saturday, Apr. 7, in two RMAC double headers. The weekend long competition will take place in Pueblo, Colo.
