Softball Readies for Home Opener against Oklahoma Panhandle State

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Cowgirls open up its home play Wednesday (Feb. 19) when the New Mexico Highlands softball team (2-7) plays hosts to Oklahoma State Panhandle in a pair of seven inning games that begin at noon.

Scouting New Mexico Highlands
 
Sophomore Dekota Monarrez is third in the conference in batting average (.522, 12-for-23) and hits (12) while easily leading the RMAC in home runs (seven), four more than teammates freshman Katelyn Bates and junior Jessica Brink. In fact, Monarrez was recently named to the 2014 Desert Stinger First Team of Feb. 14, joining her Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Week selection Feb. 11.

Five different Cowgirls have a home run as the Cowgirls easily lead the conference with 16 round-trippers on the season. Adams State, who has played two more games on the season already, is second with only six home runs. Highlands is third in the conference as a team with a .333 average.
 
In the circle, junior Jacquelyn Wood leads the team with a 2-1 record and a 2.19 ERA. She has allowed only five earned runs and 16 hits in 16 innings pitched.
 
 
Scouting Oklahoma State Panhandle
 
The Aggies enter play tomorrow with a 2-4 record and a .313 batting average. Samantha Arledge easily paces Oklahoma State Panhandle with a .483 average, 14 hits, three home runs and seven RBI's. She also has both wins in the circle for the team, holding a 2-1 record with a 5.34 ERA.
