Box Score 2 ALAMOSA, Colo. – The New Mexico Highlands softball team (4-7, 0-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) opened up conference play with a pair of losses to Adams State (4-8, 2-0 RMAC) 5-0 and 8-0 on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 22) in Alamosa, Colo.
In game one, the Cowgirls only mustered three hits in the first game as only one runner advanced into scoring position. With two outs in the top of the fourth, sophomore
Amber Cordero walked and advanced to second when junior
Jessica Brink singled to right field. However, a strikeout ended the threat.
Besides Brink,
Amber Harding and
Dekota Monarrez added hits for the visitors. Brink fell to 1-3 in the circle this year for the Cowgirls, giving up five runs and 10 hits in six innings of work.
Adams State scored all five runs in the first three innings. A triple by Erika Ecsedy with a player on scored the first run in the bottom of the first, following with a two-run single in the bottom of the second. Casey Chaney added an RBI triple in the third and scored on an RBI groundout.
Ecsedy went 2-for-3 in the first game with three RBI's. Carly DeLorenzo and Mara Dunlap each had two hits in four at-bats with a run scored. Kelsey Sellars got the complete game shutout win, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out six.
In game two, the Cowgirls had a pair of hits in the first two innings. Redshirt freshman
Annie Reynolds led off the game with a single while junior
Jacquelyn Wood had a double in the second inning. Throwing the second game, Wood fell to 3-2 on the year, giving up four runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk with four strikeouts.
The Grizzlies did not score until the bottom of the third, but scored eight runs over the final four innings. Brittney Padilla led off the third with a triple and scored on a groundout. However, Adams State exploded for three unearned runs in the fourth. With one out, Jennie Archambault reached on an error. After a strikeout, Chaney and Padilla both singled to plate the second run of the game. A wild pitch and an infield single by Sierra Mora put the home team up 4-0.
Ecsedy ended the game in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI triple.
Padilla had two hits in two at-bats with two runs scored and an RBI. Kaycee Prevedel got the complete game win, allowing only two hits while striking out seven over six innings.
The New Mexico Highlands softball team finishes the weekend tomorrow with a pair of games against Adams State beginning at 11 a.m.
