Softball Swept in Double Header with Colorado Mesa

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Cowgirls did not score a run on the day and the Mavericks  Ashley Pulido threw a perfect game in game two as the New Mexico Highlands softball team (5-15, 1-10 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) fell to Colorado Mesa (10-8, 9-3 RMAC) 3-0 in game one and 9-0 in five innings in game two.

Pulido only threw 62 pitches while striking out four for the perfect game, improving her record to 2-3 in 2014.

In game two, the Mavericks scored a run in the first and third, but exploded for five runs in the fourth to blow the game open. With the bases loaded and two outs, Tawnee Woosley tripled to center field to empty the bases. After a pitching change, leadoff hitter Megan Brown hit an inside the park home run to center field to put the visitors up 7-0. Jessica Severinsen added a solo shot – her sixth of the season – in the fifth as the Mavericks won by nine.

Jacquelyn Wood fell to 3-5 on the year in the circle for the Cowgirls, giving up six runs on six hits. The closest to reaching base safely was sophomore Dekota Monarrez, who faced a 3-1 count in the first inning. However, she flew out to the wall in left field to end the frame.

Game one saw the Mavericks and Cowgirls both tally six hits, but the visitors took advantage of three Highlands' errors. In the top of the first, Madelyn Schulz went to second on a dropped fly ball. She advanced to second on a fielding error and third on a wild pitch. A ground out RBI put Colorado Mesa up 2-0.

Tori Gil and Amber Cordero both singled in the second to put a pair on, but Jessica Severinsen got a pair of strikeouts around a passed ball to get out of the jam. In the fourth, Cordero and Amber Harding singled with two outs, but another strikeout ended the Cowgirls threat.

Jessica Brink fell to 2-7 on the year, surrendering three runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk with 12 strikeouts. Severinsen improved to 6-4, allowing no runs on six hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.
