Box Score 2 LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Cowgirls exploded for eight runs in game two, but it was not enough as New Mexico Highlands softball (5-17, 1-12 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) lost a pair of games Sunday (March 16) 9-1 and 12-8 to Colorado Mesa (12-8, 11-3 RMAC) in Las Vegas, N.M.
Game two was a high scoring affair with the Cowgirls striking first. With one out, redshirt freshman
Annie Reynolds singled up the middle and advanced to second when sophomore
Amber Cordero walked. A junior
Tori Gil single loaded the bases before everyone moved up a station on junior
Jessica Brink's RBI single. Senior
Dominique Padilla added an RBI single.
The visitors cut the deficit in half in the third, but Reynolds hit a two out, RBI double in the bottom of the third as the Cowgirls regained the two-run edge. Colorado Mesa's Karissa Nickeson tied it up with a two-run shot in the fourth, but junior
Jacquelyn Wood answered with a three-run shot to put the home team up 6-3 after four.
After one run in the fifth, Colorado Mesa edged out in front with three runs in the sixth. Makayla Kovac hit a two-run home run to tie the game before Jessica Severinse put the Mavericks in the lead for good for a solo shot in the next at-bat. The visitors added a five spot in the seventh.
Gil wrapped up the scoring with a two-run home run in the bottom of seventh with her own two-run home run.
Reynolds recorded a hit in every at-bat with two runs scored and an RBI. Wood was 3-for-4 with three RBI's and a run scored.
Brink threw the whole game, allowing 12 runs (10 earned) with 18 hits and three strikeouts. Ashley Pulido evened her record to 3-3 for Colorado Mesa, giving up five runs on eight hits with six strikeouts over the final four innings.
Kovac went 4-for-5 for Colorado Mesa with four runs scored and five RBI's.
Game one was won by Colorado Mesa 9-1 in five innings. In the bottom of the fourth, freshman
Aricia Dami hit her second home run of the year to lead off the inning.
Colorado Mesa scored in all but the fifth inning, scoring four in the top of the second. Tawnee Woosley reached on a hit by pitch, advanced to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch. Severinse added a two-run home run before Brooke Ortale hit a two out, RBI double.
Wood fell to 3-6 in the circle for the Cowgirls, allowing six runs and nine hits over two innings. Besides Dami, Gil and Cordero added hits.
Severinsen improved to 7-4, allowing three hits and one run with four strikeouts. Kovac went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
The Cowgirls return to action next weekend when it travels to Pueblo, Colo., to take part in its second of three RMAC pods. The Cowgirls will play Fort Lewis first each day before concluding play each day against host CSU-Pueblo.
