Box Score 2 PUEBLO, Colo. – On day one in the second of three Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pods Saturday (March 22), the New Mexico Highlands softball team (5-19, 1-14 RMAC) lost 8-0 in game one against host CSU-Pueblo (11-11, 8-3 RMAC) before dropping game two to Fort Lewis (15-12, 11-6 RMAC) 4-3.
In game two, the teams combined for 21 hits in the game but there was no scoring until a single run for Fort Lewis in the bottom of the fifth. The Cowgirls responded with a pair of their own in the top of the sixth to take a 2-1 lead. Senior
Dominique Padilla began the inning with a four-pitch walk before junior
Jessica Brink singled to left field. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position before sophomore
Dekota Monarrez singled both runners in to flip the score.
Fort Lewis responded with a trio of runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Highlands made it interesting in the top of the seventh. Freshman
Aricia Dami led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a redshirt freshman
Annie Reynolds single. A double play advanced the runner to third before Brink again singled to bring the Cowgirls within one. Junior
Tori Gil followed with a double to right center to put the go-ahead run into scoring position, but a strikeout ended the game.
Reynolds, Brink and Gil each recorded a pair of hits in game two while junior
Jacquelyn Wood had a hit in all three at-bats. Wood (3-7) also took the circle for the Cowgirls, allowing four runs (two earned) and 10 hits in six innings of work.
Olivia Goldberg threw the sixth inning in relief and allowed one run on four hits to improve to 2-1 on the year for Fort Lewis.
Game one saw CSU-Pueblo score five runs in the bottom of the first and never look back in an 8-0, six inning victory. For the ThunderWolves, Alexa Snyder led off the bottom of the first, stole second and scored when Jasmine Vogel singled through the left side. Vogel then stole second and advanced to third on an infield single. A walk loaded the bases before Maddison Wolfe hit a sacrifice fly. Lacey Chesser followed with a three-run home run to put the home team up five.
Chesser later homered to lead off the fifth.
The Cowgirls had one hit in the final five innings but failed to score. With one out in the sixth, Brink singled to third and advanced to second on a passed ball with two outs. Sophomore
Amber Cordero followed with a walk, but Padilla struck out to end the top of the sixth.
CSU-Pueblo ended the game in the bottom of the sixth with a two-RB I double.
Brink fell to 2-9 in the circle for the Cowgirls, allowing 12 hits and eight runs with four strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched. Kelli Henry improved to 4-7 for the home team, allowing five hits and no runs in six innings of work.
