CHADRON, Neb. – The New Mexico Highlands softball team (11-25, 7-18) usually plays Saturday and Sunday, but due to impending weather, will play Chadron State (16-18, 13-9) in a pair of double headers on Friday and Saturday (April 11-12). The games will begin at noon on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Softball Trying to Save Second Base Also playing on Friday and Saturday next weekend against Western New Mexico, the Highlands softball team –in conjunction with the baseball team - will be raising money for breast cancer research. Fans are asked to make donations for admittance to the baseball and softball games on Friday, April 18 (baseball and softball both play two, seven-inning double headers beginning at noon).
There is also "Save Second Base" T-Shirts available in the softball offices, room 232 at the Wilson Complex. There are a multitude of sizes but are on a first come, first serve basis.
More details will be available next week before the weekend games.
Scouting New Mexico Highlands The Cowgirls lost all four games last weekend having played against two of the top three teams in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, but Highlands will have a chance to climb right back into contention for a tournament this weekend at seventh-place Chadron State.
The regular starting pitchers pace Highlands from the plate also as juniors
Jessica Brink and
Jacquelyn Wood lead the team with .368 and .366 batting averages, respectfully, while sophomore
Amber Cordero also has a .366 average. Redshirt freshman
Annie Reynolds leads the team in both hits (44) and doubles (12) while sophomore
Dekota Monarrez has 10 home runs in 2014.
Wood leads the team with a 5.58 ERA and a 6-10 record in the circle.
Scouting Chadron State If you like home runs, this may be the series for you. Chadron State and Highlands sit 15th and 17th in the country with 1.12 and 1.11 home runs per game, respectively. Individually for the Eagles, Katie Londo is fourth in the conference and 28th in the nation with 0.32 home runs per game. Close behind is Monarrez and
Katelyn Bates for the Cowgirls who are 41st and 46th in the nation with 0.29 home runs per game.
While Highlands has six players who hit above .300 and hit .307 as a team, Chadron State only has two such players and hit .256 as a team.
Zoe Humphries leads the team with a .375 batting average while Kylee Polsey has a 9-6 record with one save and a 3.89 ERA.
Continuing on the long ball theme, Londo (11) and Monarrez (10) are locked in a battle for the best home run hitter in the conference. However, Monarrez is hitting .342 with 37 RBI's while Londo is only batting .295 with 18 RBI's.
Next Up The Cowgirls will try to "Save Second Base" and celebrate senior day next weekend when it welcomes Land of Enchantment-rival Western New Mexico to Las Vegas next Friday and Saturday (April 18-19) for four games.
