Softball Drops Pair at Chadron State

Sophomore Dekota Monarrez moves back in to a tie for the RMAC lead in home runs with 11.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHADRON, Neb. – The Cowgirls could only manage one run on the day as the New Mexico Highlands softball team (11-27, 7-20 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) fell 7-1 in game one and 4-0 in game two to Chadron State (18-18, 15-9 RMAC).

On an 0-2 count to lead off the seventh inning in game one, Monarrez moved into a tie for the RMAC lead with her 11th home run of the year. It was one of only three hits for the Cowgirls in the contest, as juniors Jacquelyn Wood and Tori Gil also recorded base knocks.

Junior Jessica Brink (5-13) took the loss, allowing nine hits and seven runs (two earned) with a pair of strikeouts in the complete game loss.

Chadron State held a 1-0 lead heading to the bottom of the fifth and put up a six spot. Taylor Bauer led off the inning with a walk and was sacrificed to second. Sarah Knudsen followed with a single to put runners on the corner. An error scored another run before Rebecca Wetsch hit a three-run home run. The Eagles added on an unearned run in the frame and went on to win 7-1.

Wetsch had two hits for the day with three RBI's and a run scored. Casey Polk added a pair of hits and RBI's. Kylee Polsey (10-6) took the win in game one, allowing only three hits, a run and a walk with six strikeouts.

The Cowgirls got into scoring position twice in game two, but they could not go any further in a four-run loss. Down 1-0 in the top of the third, freshman Miki Sylva had a one out hit and advanced to second on Wood's two-out hit, but the runners advanced no further. In the fourth, Monarrez walked and advanced to second on senior Dominique Padilla's infield hit. A flyout and ground out ended the Cowgirls threat.

Wood (6-11) took the loss, allowing four runs (one earned) and eight hits in the complete-game loss.

The Eagles added a trio of runs, two of which were unearned, in the bottom of the sixth for the final 4-0 win. Katie Londo had two hits for the home team while Aryn Grywusiewicz improved to 6-8 on the year with the complete game, six-strikeout performance.

The Cowgirls return to action Saturday (April 12) at 11 a.m., for the final two games against Chadron State.
