Softball Drops Pair to Top-Ranked West Texas A&M

Freshman Miki Sylva had a two-RBI double in game one.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CANYON, Texas – The New Mexico Highlands softball team (11-31) lost a doubleheader to #1 West Texas A&M (42-2) 28-2 in game one and 8-0 in game two in Canyon, Texas, Tuesday afternoon (April 15).
 
Both runs for the Cowgirls came in the top of the fourth. With one out, sophomore Dekota Monarrez walked and junior Jessica Brink singled through the lift side. After Monarrez was forced at third, freshman Miki Sylva found the gap in left center to empty the bases.
 
Brink took the loss in game one and falls to 5-15 on the year.
 
The Lady Buffs tallied 16 in the first in never looked back. Kaisha Dacosin had hits in all five at-bats with five runs scored and four RBI's. Rita Hokianga (19-2) took the win, allowing one hit in three innings pitched.
 
Game two saw West Texas A&M score five in the first, two in the second and one in the fourth for the win. For the Cowgirls, junior Tori Gil and sophomore Aylissa Lujan both had hits. Renee Erwin had hits in all three at-bats with three runs scored and two RBI's for West Texas A&M.
 
Junior Jacquelyn Wood took the loss for the Cowgirls, falling to 6-13 on the year. Tori Bayer (8-0) recorded the complete-game win for the Lady Buffs.
 
Highlands is back in action for a four-game set against Western New Mexico starting Friday (April 18). Game time for the start of the double header is noon.
