Western New Mexico Sweeps Cowgirls

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Cowgirls gave up eight unearned runs on the day as the New Mexico Highlands softball team (11-33, 7-24 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) dropped a pair of games to Western New Mexico (14-33, 12-22 RMAC) 3-0 in game one and 11-2 in game two Friday afternoon (April 18) in Las Vegas, N.M.

In game two down by one, an unearned run tied the game. Sophomore Amber Cordero led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a Mustangs miscue. Both runners moved over on a groundout before a passed ball scored Codero. Highlands added another run in the sixth when junior Jessica Brink was hit by a pitch to kick off the frame, advanced to second on a wild pitch, went to third on a passed ball and scored on freshman Katelyn Bates' two-out single.

Cordero led the Cowgirls with two hits while Brink, Bates and sophomore Dekota Monarrez had one hit each. Junior Jacquelyn Wood took the loss (6-14), allowing nine hits and eight runs (three earned) in 3.2 innings pitched.

Western New Mexico took control with six runs in the fourth. The Mustangs had the bases loaded with one out when Mariah McDonald singled down the line to score a pair. A dropped fly ball allowed two runners to score before Mary Othon and Samantha Munoz hit back-to-back RBI doubles.

McDonald went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI's. Samantha Munoz had three hits, but her only RBI came on her two-out double in the fourth. Amber Trayton took the complete-game win for the Mustangs, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned) with five strikeouts.

In the first game of the day, the Cowgirls managed a pair of singles with two outs in the first and third innings, but the runners could not advance past second base. In the first, it was Monarrez and Brink. In the third, it was redshirt freshman Annie Reynolds and Monarrez.

Senior Dominique Padilla also had a hit. Brink (5-16) took the loss in game one, allowing eight hits and three runs (two earned).

Western New Mexico had only eight hits, but five of them came in the sixth when it scored three runs. With one out, McDonald singled and Kale Gahn doubled. A dropped fly ball scored both runners on base before a Tessa Fanning infield single scored the third run.

Domi Shone took the complete game win in game one for Western New Mexico, improving to 10-15. She gave up five hits and four strikeouts.
