Box Score 2 LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Cowgirls managed a late rally in both game, but the New Mexico Highlands softball team (11-35, 7-26 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) lost a pair of games to Western New Mexico (16-33, 14-22 RMAC) 3-2 in game one and 8-5 in game two Saturday afternoon (April 19) in Las Vegas, N.M.
Game one saw Highlands fall down 3-0 before a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth brought them within one. Freshman

Miki Sylva singled to begin the frame. A groundout advanced both runners up a base. After another groundout, sophomore
Dekota Monarrez came up with a two-out single to left center to score a pair. A walk and hit by pitch in the seventh put the tying run into scoring position, but the Cowgirls failed to score.
Down 8-1 in game two, Highlands scored four runs but could not climb any closer. Freshman
Katelyn Bates led off the seventh with her eighth home run of the year. Sylva then walked and advanced to second. Junior
Jacquelyn Wood singled up the middle to put two runners on before redshirt freshman
Annie Reynolds emptied the bases with a triple. For the fourth run, Sophomore
Amber Cordero hit a two-out double to score Reynolds.
For the day, Reynolds went 4-for-6 – including a double and triple - with three RBI's and a run scored. Wood scored twice while Monarrez had a pair of RBI's. Junior
Jessica Brink (5-17) took the loss in game one, giving up eight hits and three runs with four strikeouts. Wood took the loss in game two, giving up six hits and five runs (three earned) over 1.1 innings.
Senior
Theresa Duncklee threw the final 5.2 innings of game two, allowing three hits and three runs (two earned).
The Mustangs scored all of the runs it would need in game two in the first two innings. Stephanie Higgins led off the game with an infield single before a fielder's choice and stolen base put a runner on second. An error put runners on the corners before RBI singles by Mary Othon and Lacy Granger plated a pair of unearned runs.
Western New Mexico went up 6-0 thanks to a three-run home run from Mariah McDonald and an unearned run on an error.
In game one, the Mustangs scored single tallies in the second-fourth to take the 3-0 advantage. Kylie Christman had an RBI double in the second, Kale Gahn came through with the RBI infield single in the third and Davi Martin provided the RBI base hit in the fourth.
For the day, Higgins and Gahn each had three hits in a balanced Mustangs offensive attack. McDonald had three RBI's while Othon added two. Domi Shone (11-15) picked up the complete-game win in game one, giving up six hits and two runs while striking out five. Amber Taynton (5-15) took the win in game two, giving up eight hits and five runs (four earned) in seven innings of work.
The Cowgirls conclude the 2014 season next weekend (April 26) when they travel to Golden, Colo., to battle Colorado School of Mines.
