Box Score Golden, Colo.-Â The New Mexico Highlands University women's basketball team fell to Colorado School of Mines tonight in Golden, Colorado. The Cowgirls record fall to an overall record of 3-20, RMAC 1-17.
In the first quarter, Colorado Mines took the lead early but freshman Kaylani Maviava found a way to the rim.Mines turned it over and senior
Kristy Marquez hit two jumpers to put them down by two. Junior
Giulia Simioni then hit a tripe to put the Cowgirls up by one. To end the quarter, senior
Brittany Brown hit a shot from behind the arc to up the Cowgirls up by three going into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, Mines came out hot with a 3-0 run against the Cowgirls to gain the lead again. Marquez went to work in the paint and finished with a lay-up. Brown then hit another triple to help the Cowgirls but Mines was knocking down shoots to keep their lead. At the half Mines had the 32-28 lead.
In the third quarter, senior
Michelle Traynham came out ready and knocked down a shot from downtown to cut the Colorado Mines lead down to 1. Mines continued to finish in the paint and got their lead up to six. That didn't stop the Cowgirls though, Traynham hit another triple and Simioni finished with a lay-up to bring the score back down tp two. The Cowgirls had a hard time stopping Mines in the paint. Marquez answered back with an old fashion three point play.
In the fourth quarter, The Cowgirls go into the last 10 minutes down by 4. With
Kristy Marquez hot on the free throw line and finishing in the paint this could get the Cowgirls a conference win. Colorado Mines stuck to their game plan and keep finishing with lay-up after lay-up. Mines put themselves up by ten. The Cowgirls battled back and Marquez continued to knock down free-throws and lay-up but Mines ended up on top finishing the game 78-60
