Box Score 2 LAS VEGAS, N.M.- The Cowgirls hosted the Mountain Lions in the final two games of the RMAC conference opening weekend this afternoon. The Cowgirls would drop the first game by a score of 11-2
Game 1The Mountain Lions would put pressure on the Cowgirls in the first inning. After a routine 4-3 putout the Mountain Lions would load the bases with just one out. Martinek would a sharp ball to the second baseman that scores Cusimano from third. DeRossett hit a comeback to the pitcher who decided to go to first which allowed Fonseca to cross the plate with no contest. Smith took a ball the other way past the second baseman that scored runners from second and third. After a half inning the Mountain Lions lead 4-0.
With two outs in the bottom of the second Borunda hit a triple to the right center wall. Kamai followed suit with another triple to right center. Caporal laid down a bunt right in front of the plate but the Mountain Lions rotation was to late and allowed Kamai from third to cut the Mountain Lions lead in half, 4-2 after two innings.
The Mountain Lions would strike again in the top of the fourth. Nibbe lead off the innings with a double to right field. After a strike out Hoffman singled to a diving second baseman that moved Nibbe to third. Cusimano doubled to the right center gap and pushed both Nibbe and Hoffaman across the plate to make it a 6-2 game. The Mountain Lions loaded the bases with two outs and DeRosett at the dish. She would be hit by the pitch which allowed a run to score grow the Mountain Lion's lead 7-2. Smith would battle but ultimately would walk that allowed Fonseca to score. After three and a half the Cowgirls would trail the Mountain Lions 8-2.
The Mountain Lions would add some insurance runs. Cuismano would go hit a fly ball to right field with a runner on third who tagged and scored on a close play at home. After a Fonseca single, Belligan would sned one deep over the left field fence to make it a 11-2 game with just a half inning left to play.
The Cowgirls would fall in the first game by a score of 11-2.
Game 2The Cowgirls would take game two on a pitching gem by Brincefield, who threw a one hitter, by a score of 1-0.
The Cowgirls would strike first in the second game. It was the bottom of the second.
Ashton Borunda would lead things off with a single to second. A nice sacrifice bunt by Cavone would move Borunda to second. Gonzales stepped up and singled to left and move Borunda over to third. With runners on the corners the Caporal single to left center to score Borunda from third to give the Cowgirls the 1-0 lead after two innings.
Michelle Brincefield would hold the Mountain lions hitless til the top of the fourth inning when Martinek would single to right field to break up the no hitter. It would be the only hit that Brincefield would allow.
The Cowgirls won the second game by a score of 1-0. This marks the first time since 2012 that the Cowgirls have split a series with Colorado Springs. This also marks Coach
Karin Gadberry's 100
th career win as a coach, with 38 of those coming here at Highlands.
The Cowgirls will return to action next weekend at home as they host Regis University. The first game of the series will be on Saturday at noon with the second game starting at 2 p.m.
