LAS VEGAS, N.V.- The Cowgirl softball team is starting their season off in the other Vegas. All times mentioned are in Mountain Standard Time. The Cowgirls will start their season off against Concordia University (Ore.) on Friday, February 5
th at 3 p.m. They will then take on former RMAC foe Nebraska-Kearney at 8 p.m.
On Saturday the 6
th the Cowgirls will take on Northwest Nazarene of Idaho at 3 p.m. In the night cap for the Cowgirls will take on Stanislaus St. from California. Rounding out the weekend for the Cowgirls will be a game against California State Dominguez Hills.
ConcordiaLast season Concordia went 46-19 for the season and 21-7 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. The Cavaliers are now transitioning to the NCAA and the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. They return 17 players from last year's team including Meghan Luebbert who lead the team in hits last season with 83.
Nebraska-KearneyThe Lopers went 19-28 last season including 11-15 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. They return Kate Ruwe who lead the team with 60 hits and 7 homeruns and also Rebecca Wyatt who stole 41 bases on 47 attempts.
Northwest NazareneThe Crusaders are coming off a 9-37, 2-22 GNAC season. Last year at the Desert Stings the Crusaders went 1-4. They also lost two of their better hitters in Ashley Peske who lead the team in home runs with 9 and Whitney Carlton lead the team in hits with 49.
Stanislaus St.Last season the Warriors of Stanislaus St had a 15-35 overall record and a 7-29 record in the CCAA. They have a new coach in, Jessica Ventoza a former University of Washington standout. The Warriors return their leading hitter in Nicolette Vizcanio who had 55 hits and batted .387.
California St. Dominguez HillsThe Cowgirls will take on another CCAA opponent in the Toros. Las season the Toros went 23-29 overall and 16-20 in the CCAA. Last season the Toros went 2-3 in the Desert Stinger, including beating the Cowgirls by a score of 10-3. Former New Mexico Highlands Athletic Director Jeff Faulkner now holds the same position at California St Dominguez Hills.
