Rough Day For Cowgirl Softball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SILVER CITY, N.M.- The Cowgirls traveled down to Silver City for one last RMAC showdown with the Mustangs. The Mustangs took the first two games of the series by 8-4 and 4-1.

Game 1
The Cowgirls were able to get on the board early in the top of the second. Victoria Gonzales was on third and Megan Thursby was on third with two outs when Monica Caporal singled to left and drove in Gonzales. Jacqueline Solis pushed one to right for a single and Thursby touched the plate for the run. The Cowgirls led after two innings 2-0.

Western New Mexico started their comeback in the fourth. Ramirez reached on an error by the Cowgirl's shortstop. Maldonado dug in for the Mustangs and singled to right to score Ramirez from first. They continued putting hitting together in the bottom of the fifth. A single and a sacrifice bunt gave the Mustangs a runner on second with one out. Garcia double to left center and scored Castillo. A double by Gastelum scored Garcia and Granger to give the Mustangs their first lead of the series. After five innings and just nine outs left the Mustangs led 4-2.

The Mustangs had their best inning of the game in the bottom of the sixth scoring four runs on five hits to give them five insurance runs heading into the seventh with an 8-2 lead. The Cowgirls attempted to make a comeback in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs Dakota Monarrez singled to right. Ashton Borunda dug her cleats into the box. She would pull a ball to right field where the right fielder couldn't get the ball in front of her and Monarrez scored on a throwing error by the second baseman. The Mustangs would get the final out two batters latter.

The Mustangs took the first game 8-4.

Game 2
The second game didn't see any early action on the scoreboard. Granger hit a single up the middle with one out. Castillo hit a sharp ball to second but the Cowgirls' second baseman could field it cleanly and allowed Granger to move to second and Castillo to first. That error came back to bite the Cowgirls in the butt as two batters later Garcia doubled to left and both Aker, pinch runner for Castillo, and Granger score to give the Mustangs the 2-0 lead.

The Mustangs continued their scoring in the bottom of the sixth. With the bases loaded and two outs Garcia doubled to center to score Castillo and Enriquez. With just three outs the Cowgirls needed at least four runs to keep the game going.

The Cowgirls would get one run on a Gonzalez single up the middle to score Alicia Cavone from second. The Cowgirls dropped game two by a score of 4-1.

The Cowgirls and Mustangs will wrap up the series tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. Live stats will be provided by Western New Mexico.
