Three Homeruns Not Enough For Cowgirls At Western New Mexico

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SILVER CITY, N.M.- The Cowgirls wrapped the series against the Mustangs of Western New Mexico this morning and afternoon. The Cowgirls dropped both in the seventh inning, 6-5 and 12-11.
 
Game 1
The Mustangs were on the board first in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded the Cowgirls walked Gastelum and Castillo came in to score. They added more in the bottom of the third as M. Garcia went deep to give the Mustangs the 3-0 lead over the Cowgirls after three.
 
The Cowgirls' bats showed up in the in the top of fourth. Ashton Borunda lead off with a double to centerfield. She advanced to third on a Brittany Moya ground out. Monica Caporal drove Borunda home as she got out to give the Cowgirls score their first run of the day. KK Kamai and Marissa Valencia hit back-to-back shots to make it a 3-3 game. After a walk and a pitching change Jacqueline Soils singled to give Cowgirls runners at first and second. Two batters latter Dekota Monarrez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score another run. Borunda singled to second to score Solis from third. After three and a half in the book the Cowgirls led 5-3.
 
The Mustangs score one run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-4. The most important runs came in the sixth. With one out M. Garcia walked for the Mustangs. Ramirez reached on a fielding error by the Cowgirl shortstop and the Mustangs had runners on first and second. A Lacy Granger singled to right and a throwing error home allowed M. Garcia to score and the rest of the runners to advance to second and third. Misenhimer singled down the right field line to score Ramiez and give the Mustangs the 6-5 win in game one of the day.
 
Game 2
The Cowgirls started off game two much better. With runners on second and third Alycia Cavone reached on a fielding error by the the shortstop and Solis scored from third. With runners on second and third Valencia doubled to center and earned two RBIs. Breanna Cabrera followed up with a double to right and scored Valencia. The Cowgirls led after a half inning 4-0.
 
In the Mustang's half of the first inning. With a runner on third M. Garcia reached on an error by the second baseman and scored Castillo. Three batters latter Munoz walked with the bases loaded to score their second run of the inning. Moreno turned a 4-2 Cowgirl lead into a 6-4 Mustang lead with a grand slam to right field.
 
The top of the third was one of the Cowgirls best innings of the season. It started with a Caovne walk then a Jamie Weatherbee homerun tied the game at six. Valencia followd with a double. Cabrera knocked the ball to center but the centerfielder was not able to field the ball cleanly and allowed Valencia to score. Cabrera scored on a double by Caporal to make it an 8-6 game. With the bases loaded Cavone doubled and three Cowgirls scored. The score was 11-6 after three.
 
The Mustangs scored one run in the bottom half of the inning. They would add two more in the bottom of the sixth by a score of 11-9. With just three outs left the in the game and down two the Mustangs would start a rally. With one out Moreno doubled through the left side. After another Mustang out, Castillo doubled and Moreno scored to make it a one run game. Castillo, the tying run, advanced to third to on a wild pitch. She would then score with Li. Granger on a double to right center to by M. Garcia to give the Mustangs the 12-11 win and weekend sweep over the Cowgirls.
 
The Cowgirls will be back in action next weekend in a RMAC pod in Durango Colorado against Fort Lewis and Colorado Mesa. The first Cowgirl pod is scheduled to start on Friday at 1 p.m.
