Roadruuners Take Day One Sweep Over Cowgirls

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Las Vegas, N.M.-  The Cowgirls and Roadrunners met for two games in in the sunny Las Vegas, N.M.

Game 1
The Cowgirls would drop the first game by a final score of 12-2 in five innings.

The Roadrunners did just as their name says and ran onto the board first. It started after a Roadrunner out when Lovas walked. She would then steal second. On a ground out by Fields, Lovas took third to give them a runner just 60 feet away. Espinoza singled to third base to score Lovas. After a half inning of play the Roadrunners lead 1-0.

The Cowgirls answered in the bottom of the first. Brittany Moya led off with a double down the left field line. After two Cowgirl outs Jamie Weatherbee singled and Moya scored from second to tie the game.

It was the top of the second that changed the game. It started with a single to short by Smith to start the Roadrunner's half of the second. A single through the left side by Anderson to move over Smith and give the Roadrunners on first and second. Peters reached on a fielder's choice where the Cowgirls got the lead runner Smith at third. A double steal gave the Roadrunners two ducks in scoring position. After a strike out and a walk the bases would be loaded. Lovas singled up the middle and score Peters. Fields hurt the Cowgirls with a single to second base that scored two. The Roadrunners would score one more before the half inning was over to make it 6-1 after one and a half innings.

In the top of the fourth the Roadrunners added some more insurance runs. With runners on second and third Smith stepped into the box. Her timeing was perfect as she singled up the middle and earned two RBIs. Anderson smacked the ball to right center for a triple and pushed Smith across the plate to make it a 9-1 Roadrunner lead. Peters followed with a double to right center and scored Anderson. After a strike out Bakovich singled to left and scored another Roadrunner run to make it 11-1. Lovas singled to score another run and made it a 12-1 Roadrunner lead after the top of the fourth.

The Cowgirls chipped a little bit of the Roadrunners lead in the bottom half of the fourth. Jamie Weatherbee singled to right with one out. Breanna Cabrera singled up the middle on a well hit ball to move Weatherbee to second. Megan Thursby followed with a single through the right side to load the bases. Victoria Gonzales hit a deep ball to right center that allowed Weatherbee to tag from third and Cabrera from second and cut the lead down to 12-2, where it would be after four innings.

The Cowgirls would end up drop the first game by a final score of 12-2 in five innings.

Game 2
The Cowgirls and Roadrunners played a very exciting pitchers duel in the second game. It would be the Cowgirls' third extra inning game in just two weekends. A late homerun by Peters of Metro gave the Roadrunners the 2-0 lead in the ninth inning.

Both Breanna Velasquez and Smith threw great games and didn't allow the other team to score. After seven innings Velasquez had only given up six hits to the Roadrunners while Smith had given up just a single hit to the Cowgirls. In the top of the ninth with Terry on first, Peters got a shot and drove it the other way when the wind helped it carry over the fence to give the Roadrunners the 2-0 lead.

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth Ashton Brorunda singled to left field, but it was a little to late as the Cowgirls would hit into their final out as the Roadrunner shortstop fielded the ball and threw out the runner at first.

Velasquez ended the game with three strike outs and three walk and only gave up six hits while facing 36 batters.

The Cowgirls and Roadrunners will play two tomorrow starting at 11 a.m. Live stats and video will be provided.
