Box Score 2 LAKEWOOD, Colo.- The Cowgirls opened play in their last pod of the season this afternoon. They had games against Colorado Mesa and Colorado Christian.
Game 1 vs Colorado MesaThe Cowgirls allowed three runs early before making it a one run game. Unfortunately, the Mavericks showed why they have the 25-1 RMAC record as they took game one over the Cowgirls 6-3.
In the bottom of the first inning the Cowgirls allowed two runs on three hits. The Cowgirls stopped the bleeding by forcing a ground out with runners on first and second. The Mavericks added one more run on a single by Kovac. After two innings the Cowgirls trailed 3-0.
The Cowgirls got on the board in the third inning on a
Jade Callister homerun. They added another run in the top of the fifth. With KK Kamai on first,
Marissa Valencia at second, and
Ashton Borunda at third
Jamie Weatherbee singled to left field and pushed Borunda across the plate to make it a 3-2 game.
The Mavericks didn't like having the breathing room as they scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 6-2 game.
The Cowgirls didn't give up as they started to fight back in the top of the seventh. With
Marissa Valencia at second, after a double to centerfield, Kamai stepped into the batter's box. She singled to center and Valencia came around to score. The Mavericks would record their last two out and end the game. Colorado Mesa 6, Cowgirls 3.
Game 2 vs Colorado ChristianThe Cowgirls had the 5-2 going into the bottom of the seventh but the Cougars would come back and take the 6-5 win.
The Cowgirls were on the board first in the top of the second. With Caporal at third Callister singled to short and Caporal added a run to her season total. The Cougars tied the game just and inning and a half later in the third when they took advantage of the Cowgirl shortstop error.
The best inning of the Cowgirl's afternoon came in the top of fifth. Weatherbee led things off with a double down the left filed line.
Jacquelyn Solis singled to short and Weatherbee advanced to third. After two Cowgirl outs Alyisa Cavone singled to left and Weatherbee scored and the Cowgirls regained the lead 2-1. Kamai hit a sharp one in the 6-4 hole where the centerfield couldn't field the ball cleanly and allowed Cavone and Soils to score. With four and a half innings in the book the Cowgirls lead 4-1.
The Cougars added one run in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2. That run would end up being important.
The Cougars' Farmer led things off with a walk in the bottom of the seventh. Two batters later Farmer would be thrown out at the plate by Michelle Bricefield, the pitcher. The Cougars sent up Perry who singled through the right side and Billante scored from second. The Cowgirls then changed pitchers as
Brianna Velasquez came in. An error by the Cowgirl's catcher allowed a Cougar run to score and cut the Cowgirls led to just 5-4. With the bases loaded and two outs Edison dug her feet into the box. She would single up the middle two score two runs and give the Cougars a walk-off win in dramatic fashion.
