Tough Texas Trip for Cowgirls

UTEP too much in 8-0 loss

Box Score Las Vegas, NM - The New Mexico Highlands women's soccer team took on the University of Texas-El Paso Wednesday night in El Paso and the result was a lopsided 8-0 win for the DI Miners.

Cowgirl goal keeper Brianna Ruelas did her best to fend off the UTEP onslaught in the early going. In the second minute, the Miners were awarded a corner kick and got a high-floating shot that seemed destined for the net but Ruelas made the save.

The Cowgirls continued to battle evenly with the Miners in early stages.  A long UTEP  run up the left wing at just under the 15 minute mark saw Ruelas one-on-one with an attacking Miner. The Cowgirl goalie again came up with a big save, but before she could grab the rebound a UTEP player netted the game's first goal. It was tough going after that for the Cowgirls as UTEP tallied five first half goals.

For the game, the Cowgirls did manage 11 shots, including five on goal, but were unable to push the ball past the UTEP goal keepers and fell to 0-3-1. Next up are weekend matches versus Adams State ( Friday at 11am) and Fort Lewis (Sunday at 1pm). Both matches will be played at Taos Eco Park, the Cowgirl's temporary home away from home in Taos.
