LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands University Athletic H Club Hall of Fame has inducted six Cowboy and Cowgirl alums for the Class of 2019 while giving special recognition to others Thursday, Sept. 19, during homecoming weekend at NMHU.

Ted Baca (baseball and track), George Chavez (track and cross country), Ron Gentry (football), Moises Gutierrez (football), Robert Moszee (football) and Jessica Sanders (volleyball) are part of the Hall of Fame Class of 2019 while Kelly Don Reeves will be honored with the Meritorious Service and Lifetime Achievement in Coaching Award and David Lucero (football) will also receive special recognition.

TED BACA, Baseball & Track – B.A. 1964, M.S. 1967, Ph. D. University of Oregon
Ted "Teddy" Baca was a two-sport athlete who was a starter on the 1960 Frontier Conference track and field championship. That year the NMHU baseball team also defeated Texas Tech, New Mexico State and Arizona State. Baca was selected "Rookie of the Year" by his teammates. He was also a long jumper in track and was a member of the NMHU Frontier Conference Championship Track Team.

GEORGE CHAVEZ, Track & Cross Country – B.S. 1977, M.A. 1985
George Chavez enrolled at NMHU as a transfer student and former track member from Eastern New Mexico in 1974. He was a member of ENMU's national championship prior to transferring back to his hometown of Las Vegas. In 1975, Chavez led the NMHU cross country team to the district championship and selected to the all-district team. In 1976, Chavez finished 26th in the national cross country meet.

RON GENTRY, Football – B.B.A. 1970
Ron Gentry was a starting guard for four years under head coach John Levra. In 1966, as a sophomore, he helped the Cowboys earn the No. 1 ranking in NAIA during the regular season. Gentry was voted team captain of the 1968 Cowboy football team that averaged 59.5 points per game and were the No. 1 ranked NAIA football team at the end of the regular season.

MOISES M. GUTIERREZ, Football – B.A. 1999
Moises "Mo" M. Gutierrez was a four-year letterman and three-year starter at guard for the NMHU football program. Â During his playing career, he was a two-time Academic All-American and three times was named to the District 7 All-Academic Team. Moises went on to distinguished military career. Colonel Gutierrez completed his Military Commissioned-ROTC at NMHU in 1991 and retired active military service in 2018. Â He was a Cavalry/Armor officer who served 28 years and has numerous citations and deployments.

ROBERT MOSZEE, Football – B.S. 1979
Robert "Mo" Moszee played defensive back under position coach Jim Marshall. He was a four-year starter for the Cowboy football team and earned All-RMAC honors all four seasons. He led the team in interceptions in 1974, 1975 and 1977. According to Marshall, "He was noted as the best defensive back in the entire conference. Moszee received a formal invite from the Philadelphia Eagles after his college playing career.Â

JESSICA SANDERS, Volleyball – B.A. 2003, M.A. 2010
Jessica Sanders (Flannery) played volleyball from 2001-03 and returned to play a final year in 2005 (named team captain). She was RMAC Academic All-Conference in 2001 as well as RMAC Player of the Week several times.

MERITORIOUS SERVICE AND LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT
IN COACHING AWARD
KELLY DON REEVES – B.A. 1970, M.A. 1971
This inaugural award will be awarded posthumously to Kelly Reeves. Reeves played for coach John Levra as a defensive tackle from 1966-67 with the team going a combined 18-3 over that time. Reeves went on to serve as graduate assistant in 1970. Reeves coached one year in Kansas before a long stint in Texas, retiring as the head coach of Round Rock Westwood High School. He later became the Round Rock ISD athletic director. Reeves was named Texas Athletic Director of Year in 1996, to the Texas Athletic Director's Hall of Honor in 2000 and a recipient of the National Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association Citation for Service to High School Athletics Award.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD
DAVID LUCERO - 1985
David Lucero attended NMHU from 1981-1985. Recruited initially as a running back from West Las Vegas High School, an injury to the starting kicker provided Lucero with an opportunity to try out as a placekicker. Not only did Lucero win the job, his first attempt was a successful 48-yard field goal, the longest in the conference that year. He received all-conference Honors for three years, and was first team all-conference two years. He ended his career with 27 field goals. Lucero went on to kick for the Professional USFL League with the Denver Gold and Arizona Outlaws.
