Las Vegas, NM - The NMHU Cowboy's competed this past weekend in the Tracy Borah Duals up in Gunnison, Colorado at Western State. Here the Cowboy's wrestled 4 dual meets against some highly ranked and talented teams. The Cowboys came out with 2 wins and 2 loses, in what Coach Moses called a "good showing" for the Cowboys first Dual meets of the year. Here is a recap of the Dual meets, with the results at the bottom of the page.
9 AM-
NMHU VS #14 UNC-Pembroke
It was UNC Pembroke who got out to an early dual lead with a decision at 125lbs but the Cowboys responded with back to back wins at 133 and 144lbs. (JR)
Isaac Garcia collected the fall at 133 which was a huge momentum swing and loacl athlete Jonathon Trujillo followed with a big time decision victory over the #5 ranked wrestler in the country to put Highlands up 9-3 after 3 weights. From that point on it was back and forth. Pembroke won by major decision at 149lbs and the Cowboys answered with a 6 point Fall at 157lbs from (RS-JR)
Allen Michel but gave 6 points right back as Pembroke secured a pin at 165lbs. At 174lbs (SR)
Kenny Yara came up big with a victory by decision to give Highlands an 18-13 team lead, but at 184 and 197lbs Pembroke took the lead back with a decision and major decision victory, bringing the team score to Pembroke 20 Highlands 18 with one match left to decide the dual. At Heavy Weight (RS-SO)
Julian Sanchez was the perfect man for the job as he pulled out a win by fall giving the Cowboys 6 more team points which sealed the upset victory for the Cowboys over the #14 ranked Division II team in the country.

NMHU VS #24 Findlay University
Once again it was the opponent who got on the board first with Findlay winning a 1-0 decision at 125lbs and just like the first dual the cowboys responded with back to back wins at 133 and 141lbs.
Isaac Garcia came through with a grind it out 5-1 victory over a tough opponent at 133 and Jonathon Trujillo followed with a dominate 14-2 major decision at 141lbs to give the Cowboys a 7-3 team lead after 3 matches. The next 3 matches were all Findlay by way of fall, putting the Cowboys in a 21-7 deficit. Thats when Highlands started its comeback. At 174 (SR)
Kenny Yara received a forfeit for 6 team points,
Lance Killgore then won a nail biter 2-0 at 184lbs, and
Luke Allan came up clutch with a win by fall after trailing early on at 197lbs. This made the team score NMHU 22 Findlay 21 with one match to go and the dual once again coming down to
Julian Sanchez and the Heavy Weight match. Just like the previous dual Julian came up big for the team with a 9-0 major decision and finalized yet another upset victory for the NMHU Cowboys over another ranked opponent.

NMHU VS #19 Fort Hays State University
Match number 3 of the day finally saw the Cowboys get off to a lead first with (SO)
Marcus Santillanes picking up a victory by decision. Fort Hays then went on to win the next 3 matches with a fall at 133, a decision at 141 and a major decision at 149lbs. The rest of the dual was a back and forth battle. The Cowboys collected a pin at 157lbs by (RS-JR)
Allen Michel and a victory by decision at 165lbs from (FR)
Thomas Tolbert. Fort Hays answered with back to back wins at 174 and 184lbs by major decision and by technical fall to widen the gap of the team score to a 22-13 Fort Hays lead. At 197lbs (RS-SR)
Denzell Morrow put the Cowboys back in the match and within striking distance with a fall to cut the lead to 22-19 with one match to go. For the 3rd time in as many meets, the dual was going to be decided in the Heavy Weight match. Cowboys heavy Weight
Julian Sanchez got out to an early lead and it looked hopeful for the Cowboys but he couldn't hang on and the cowboys ended up losing the match by fall which sealed the victory for Fort Hays State.

NMHU VS Indianapolis University
In the Final dual meet of the day, the Cowboys took a little while to get going with back to back loses by fall at 125 and 133lbs to start the meet, but at 141lbs Jonathon Trujillo put Highlands on the board with a narrow 6-5 decision, making the team score Indianapolis-12 Cowboys-3 after the first 3 weights. Unfortunately, that victory was short lived for the Cowboy's as Indianapolis took the next 4 matches, making the team score 25-3 in Indianapolis's favor. The teams split the next to matches with
Lance Killgore receiving a forfeit at 184lbs and
Luke Allan dropping a close 6-4 match at 197lbs. The last match of the dual and of the day had
Julian Sanchez winning 4-0, which ended up being too little too late.

The Cowboys return to action this week as they travel to Chadron to take on the Eagles on Thursday, January 16th. The Cowboys will then stop at Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado on Friday, January 17th, to take on the Orediggers and San Francisco State Gators.
