LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands baseball team plays its home opener this week as the Cowboys host Wayland Baptist for a four-game series starting 1 p.m. Friday at Brandt Baseball Field.

NMHUÂ is coming off dropping four games in Alva, Oklahoma, losing to Northwestern Oklahoma State twice (10-7 and 10-6), Oklahoma Baptist 12-4 and Washburn University 14-4.
On the season,
Joe Kuhn leads the team in hitting at .313 with a home run, double and three RBI.
Nathan Vetter is hitting .278 with two doubles and three RBI.
On the mound,
Dominick Castillo has tossed 4.1 scoreless innings in relief to lead NMHU with five strikeouts and two hits allowed.
Hunter Vancurler has a 4.15 ERA in three relief appearances.

The Pioneers are coming off of a three-game sweep of Peru State in their home-opening series last week.
Hayden Ingram (.480), Tyler Latham (.474) and Dawin Santos (.455) lead the team in hitting with Santos leading WBU with a team-best three homers. Arturo Disla leads the team with 10 RBI while Ingram and Latham have a team-best 12 runs apiece.
Starting pitchers Ty Jackson (10 strikeouts, 12 innings) and Deric Trevino (18 strikeouts, 12.2 innings) are both 2-0 and haven't given up an earned run this season in two starts. Trevino has given up just four hits in those 12.2 innings.
