ST. LOUIS --- New Mexico Highlands'
Allen Michel took eighth place Saturday at the NCAA Division II Championships on Saturday to earn All-American status.
After going 3-1 on Friday - including a pair of wins over seeded opponents - Michel fell to No. 5 Ty McGeary of West Liberty 10-2 to move to the seventh-place match. There, Michel lost to Caleb Spears of Newberry, 6-3, to take eighth place.
Michel finished the season 21-12.Â
It was a great weekend for the unseeded Michel who also earned the Elite 90 Award - an honor given to the wrestler competing at the championships with the highest cumulative GPA.
