Splitting the squad between the Bryan Clay Invite in California and the Ross Black Open in Hobbs, NM, the New Mexico Highlands track and field program came up with two school records, two wins and a half-a-dozen personal bests to highlight performances as the RMAC conference championships come into focus.
Out in California, both
Faith Lovato (5K) and Andrew Amor (10K) set new school records while Mart Nijhuis (5k/14:46) set a personal best.
At the Ross Black meet, both Katy Scott and Cemore Donald came up with event wins. Scott started things off on Friday-- winning the hammer throw with a season best mark (52.79m/173'9") and solidifying her hold on the second spot on the RMAC performance list. On Saturday, Donald raced her way to a big win in the 400M. Her 57.21 puts her in the top ten in the RMAC and is a collegiate best for the transfer from South Plains College.
Lucia Harrison joined Donald with a strong 400M performance. The junior from Albuquerque ran a personal best 57.67, good for third place and a solid qualifying spot for the upcoming conference championships. Harroson also continued to get better in the javelin, her 34.07/111'9" toss was good for third in the event and guarantees her a spot at the RMAC meet.
Other season best marks at Ross Black:
HU coach
Bob DeVries is optimistic about the upcoming RMAC meet.
"Our athletes are really starting to peak-- Coach Dunbar has all our throwers hitting season bests and coach Russell keeps pushing our 400 athletes to really fast marks. I'm looking forward to the 4x4 up in Chadron."
The 2023 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships are April 28-30 in Chadron, NE. The Cowgirls currently have ten athletes and two relays in qualifying spots for the championship meet.
The squad will have a final tune-up opportunity this Thursday at the Don Kirby Open hosted by the University of New Mexico. Events get underway at 1PM at the UNM Track and Field Complex .
