Las Vegas, New Mexico - It's Homecoming 2023 - NMHU will host Adams State University on Saturday at Sanchez Family Stadium. Kick-off is at 1:00 pm. The Cowboys enter Saturday's game at 2-2 overall and 1-1 in RMAC play. The Grizzlies are also 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.. ASU opened conference play in Golden with a loss to Colorado School of Mines and bounced back last week with a 25-24 win over Fort Lewis at Rex Stadium in Alamosa.
The Series: A look back at the last ten games finds the Grizzlies holding a 7-3 edge over the Cowboys. NMHU won last year in Alamosa 23-21 powered, in part, by
Shawntay Mills Jr. 168 rushing yards.
Scouting Adams State University: The Grizzlies are led by Head Coach Jarrell Harrison. The graduate of the University of Missouri is in his third year at the helm of the Grizzlies. Through four games this year, Adams State is scoring 18.5 points per game while giving up 34.5 per game.
"Adams State is coming off a good win over Fort Lewis last week," said NMHU Head Coach
Ron Hudson. "They are a lot like us, up and down. They are getting healthy and I expect them to come to our place ready to play. If we continue to make mistakes, they will make it a long day for us."
Hudson File: Head Coach
Ron Hudson is in his second season at the helm of the Cowboys. He was introduced as the Head Coach at NMHU on January 6th, 2022. Hudson is a graduate of Muskingum College (OH) where he was a four-year starting center for the Fighting Muskies football team.
Last Outing: New Mexico Highlands came up on the wrong end of a 42-7 decision last week to South Dakota School of Mines. The Hardrockers outgained NMHU 403-244 and led the contest from start to finish. The lone score for the Cowboys came by way of a nine yard touchdown run from freshman
Cayden Walton in the fourth quarter. Senior
Devin Coney led the way defensively with 12 tackles for the Cowboys.
"Of course I am disappointed about the outcome, but even more disappointed with how we handled adversity." said Coach Husdson. "We need to pattern ourselves after South Dakota Mines. They were more physical, more disciplined and didn't make as many mistakes. We cannot just throw our hat out there and expect to win."
Homecoming: Saturday is homecoming at New Mexico Highlands University. The Cowboys beat Fort Lewis College in last year's homecoming game by a 27-3 count.
"There is lots going on this week on campus," said Coach Hudson. "We have a lot of alums here, a couple came out to practice this week and talked to the team. I want our players to understand the history and tradition of this football program."
By The Numbers: Four weeks into the season, the Cowboys are averaging 28.0 points per game on offense while giving up just over 32 points per game.
Shawntay Mills Jr. is fifth in the RMAC rushing for 63 yards per game.
Teneil Nichols is 11th in the conference in scoring and Will McDaniel is fifth in field goals made.
Roster Break Down: This year's edition of the Cowboy's roster features 39 freshmen, 14 sophomores, 24 juniors, and 22 Seniors. 13 different states are represented on this year's roster with California (32), New Mexico (31), and Texas (16) leading the way.
Up Next: The Cowboys hit the road for their longest road trip of the year as they make the 710 mile trip to Spearfish, South Dakota, to play Black Hills State University. Kickoff is 1:00 pm.
Home Schedule: The Cowboys will play six games in the friendly confines of the Sanchez Family Stadium in Las Vegas in 2023. Single game tickets for the remainder season are available now at
