Rapid City, South Dakota - The Cowboys made their longest road trip of the 2024 campaign on Saturday afternoon traveling to South Dakota Mines and coming out on the short end of a 40-19 decision against the Hardrockers. NMHU is now 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the RMAC.
After South Dakota Mines drew first blood, the Cowboys responded with a four play, 75 yard scoring drive culminating with a 15 yard touchdown run by freshman
Waika Crawford. The point after by
Logan Matthews was good, giving NMHU the 7-6 lead half way through the opening period.
In the second quarter the Cowboys scored on a 56 yard pass from Crawford to
Teneil Nichols and a five yard pass from Crawford to
Cayden Walton that brought NMHU within one, 20-19, at the break.
The Cowboys were unable to find the end-zone in the second half as they fell 40-19 in the conference opener.
Freshman
Waika Crawford was 17 of 28 for 171 yards and two touchdowns and he added 36 yards and a score on the ground in his first collegiate start.
Tevita Valeti had 14 carries for 79 yards rushing.
Teneil Nichols had 80 yards on five receptions and a touchdown and
Maurice Newton added four catches for 66 yards.
Fabiano Valdez was the Cowboys leading tackler with nine, while
Trenton Johnson added six.
The Cowboys host nationally ranked Western Colorado next Saturday afternoon. Kick-off is set for 12:00 pm.
