Las Vegas, New Mexico - After sweeping last week's games in Las Vegas, the Cowgirls find themselves on the road for five consecutive contests beginning with Thursday's game at UCCS. NMHU is 7-7 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
THE FEARLING FILE:
Lindsey Fearing is in her first year leading the Cowgirls having been named Head Coach on May 3rd, 2024. The Black Hills State graduate picked up her first career win on November 9th when NMHU beat Western New Mexico 80-60. She recorded her first RMAC win on December 7th as the Cowgirls topped Colorado School of Mines 74-73 in overtime.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Kapiolani Anitielu was named the RMAC Defensive player of the week on Monday afternoon. She posted back-to-back six-steal outings, helping the Cowgirls hand Black Hills State their first RMAC loss of the season and also defeating Chadron State. She came up big in the fourth quarter of the 77-63 win against the Yellow Jackets, with four defensive rebounds and a steal, and finished the game with six steals, six rebounds (five defensive), and a blocked shot. Anitielu followed that with six steals, three rebounds (two defensive), and a blocked shot in the 95-76 win against Chadron State. Offensively, she averaged 26 points per game – a career high 28 against BHSU and 24 against CSC – and shot 47 percent (21-of-45) from the floor. She led a New Mexico Highlands defensive effort that nabbed 45 turnovers in the two wins.
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING: Junior
Juliana Aragon leads the way for NMHU through 14 games as she is seventh in the RMAC in scoring (16.6 per game), fourth in assists (4.1 per game) and sixth in steals (2.1). Aragon is also fifth in the conference with a field goal percentage of 45.8% and second in free throw percentage at 85.7%.
Freshman
Kapiolani Anitielu is eighth in the conference in scoring at 15.7 points per game, ninth in field goal percentage (40.1%), and tenth in three pointers made per game at 1.6. She is also fifth in blocked shots (1.1 per game) and seventh in steals (2.1 per game).
As a team, the Cowgirls are third in the RMAC in scoring at 72.1 points per game and third in the conference with a 42.7% field goal percentage.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION: UCCS enters play on Thursday at 8-7 overall and tied with the Cowgirls at 4-4 in the RMAC. Amyah Moore Allen is the leading scorer for UCCS at 17.5 points per game. She has scored in double-digits in the last seven Mountain Lion games. Maison White is the team's leading rebounder at 10.3 per game. Misty Wilson is in her second season leading the UCCS program where she has a record of 31-15. UCCS will travel to historic Las Vegas for a game with NMHU on February 22nd.
CSU Pueblo is 11-5 overall and 6-2 in conference play heading into this weekend's game. The Thunderwolves host Adams State on Thursday evening before hosting the Cowgirls on Saturday. Alisha Little is CSU Pueblo's leading scorer (24.4 points per game) and rebounder (10.6 per game). This is the sixth season for Tommie Johnson at the helm of the program at CSU Pueblo where he has a career record of 76-76. Saturday's contest in Pueblo is the only meeting of the year between the tewo teams.
