Cowgirl Basketball Open With Crossover

Las Vegas, New Mexico - New Mexico Highlands opens the 2025-26 season with three games at the John A. Wilson Complex for the South Central Regional Crossover. The two teams from the Lone Star Conference, Western New Mexico out of Silver City, New Mexico, and Cameron University out of Lawton, Oklahoma, will come to historic Las Vegas to play two teams from the RMAC: the Cowgirls and Fort Lewis out of Durango, Colorado.

COACH FEARING:
Coach Fearing enters her second year as the head coach of the Cowgirls. Last season, Coach reached the RMAC Tournament with a 13-13 record before falling to Colorado Mesa in the first round on the road. It was the first time in 20 years that a Cowgirls basketball team had reached the postseason.

RMAC COACHES POLL:
New Mexico Highlands women's basketball was picked 8th in the 2025-26 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, released last month. The Cowgirls were 13-14 overall and 10-10 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference last season.

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION:
The Cowgirls will face Cameron University out of the Lone Star Conference first on Friday (7 PM). Head Coach Jeffrey Mahoney is entering his third season at the helm of the Aggies program, after spending the previous three seasons as the assistant coach. Mahoney is 19-35 after taking over the program mid season in 2022, following the prior coach's resignation. Cameron was picked to finish 13th in the Lone Star Conference preseason poll.

The Cowgirls will then face in-state foe Western New Mexico out of the Lone Star Conference on Saturday (3 PM). Brenda Nichols is entering her second year leading the Mustangs program. Nichols is best known for her run as Head Women's Basketball Coach at Sam Houston State University from 2006 to 2018. In her 12 years at Sam Houston, Nichols won the university's first women's Southland Conference championship and appeared in the NCAA Division I postseason tournament in the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) and the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT). Nichols was awarded Southland Conference "Coach of the Year" honors in 2013. Western New Mexico was picked to finish 16th in the Lone Star Conference preseason poll.
