Las Vegas, New Mexico - NMHU split Saturday's doubleheader with visiting CSU-Pueblo dropping the opener 20-6 before rallying to win the nightcap 8-7. The Cowboys are 10-25 overall and 2-17 in conference play.
CSU-Pueblo picked up on Saturday where they left off on Friday as they scored 20 runs on 20 hits in Saturday's opener. They put the game out of reach when they plated eight runs in the top half of the sixth inning.
Carlos Chavez was three four four with three RBI to pace NMHU offensively.
Bryant O'Neil was two for four and
Gael Bernal had a pair of RBI.
In Saturday's second game the Cowboys found themselves trailing 7-1 after four innings of play but a five run outburst in the home half of the fifth inning keyed a gritty comeback. The big blast in the inning came courtesy of a
Carlos Chavez homer that scored
Forrest Simpson and
Bryant O'Neil to pull the Cowboys within a run at 7-6.
In the very next inning
Bryant O'Neil hit a two out homer to left field to tie the score at 7-7.
With the score still tied at 7-7 and the Cowboys up in the seventh,
Roman Robles got a one out walk.
Sinhue Gonzalez promptly laced a double to advance Robles to third. The very next batter,
Richie Amavizca lofted a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Robles to score the winning run to give NMHU the 8-7 win.
Not to be overlooked in the win was the effort of freshman
Anthony Reyes who worked three and two thirds innings of scoreless relief to earn his second win of the season. Reyes allowed just one hit and didn't walk a batter in earning the win.
Bryant O'Neil and
Carlos Chavez each had three RBI in the game.
O'Neil is now fourth in the RMAC with 12 home runs on the year.
The Cowboys and ThunderWolves close out their series on Sunday afternoon starting at 12:00 pm.
