Las Vegas, New Mexico - The Cowgirls dropped a tough five set match to visiting Westminster on Friday night to open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. With the loss the NMHU is 4-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play while the Griffins improve to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the RMAC.
After the visitors took the opening set the Cowgirls came back and scored the final three points to take the second set 26-24. Westminster won set three 25-16 and NMHU bounced back to take set four 25-20 to force the deciding fifth set.
Westminster led in set five by four points early at 7-3 but the Cowgirls wouldn't go away as they came within one point on a couple of different occasions. The Grifffins scored three of the final points in the set to secure the win.
Arianna Jamerson had a match high 18 kills to pace the Cowgirls while
Aziza Morris and
Jaylee Gonzales added 13 kills apiece. Gonzales hit a season high .400 in the match.
Naya Dornic and
Abby Carlsen had 27 and 23 assists respectively.
Defensively
Meg Pfannerstill led NMHU with 13 digs.
As a team the Cowgirls hit .251 for the match.
"I am happy with the way we battled tonight, but we have to clean up the unforced errors," said Coach
Meg Grose. "I thought our crowd was great and it was nice to have so many former Cowgirl players at the match."
The Cowgirls are right back at it on Saturday night hosting nationally ranked Colorado Mesa at 7:00 pm. The Mavericks head to Las Vegas after defeating Adams State 3-2 on Friday night in Alamosa.
