Hobbs, New Mexico - New Mexico Highlands closed its series at the University of the Southwest with a dominant 6-0 victory on Monday afternoon at The Jake Williams Field.
The Cowboys controlled the game from the outset, scoring in the first inning when
Truett Ross singled to right field to drive in
Lubby Marrujo for a 1-0 lead. New Mexico Highlands added two more runs in the fourth, highlighted by an RBI double from
Tamden Webb-Tate and a bases-loaded walk to
Brin Osterman that made it 3-0.
On the mound,
Aidan Joyce set the tone with six scoreless innings, allowing no hits while striking out two and working around a pair of walks and hit batters. The bullpen preserved the shutout over the final three frames, combining to allow just five total hits on the afternoon.
The Cowboys broke the game open in the ninth inning. After a walk and a hit batter, Webb-Tate launched a three-run home run to left field, pushing the advantage to 6-0 and sealing the victory.
Webb-Tate led the offense, going 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, and four RBIs. Marrujo and Ross each collected two hits, while
Nico Hilger also added two hits and scored twice as the Cowboys finished with 12 hits as a team.
With the win, New Mexico Highlands improves to 5-6 on the season.
The Cowboys play three non-conference games at Adams State starting on February 27th.
