Las Vegas, New Mexico - The Cowboys jumped out to an early lead in the opener but could not hold off a late rally as Colorado School of Mines defeated New Mexico Highlands University in both games of an RMAC doubleheader Saturday at Brandt Field in Las Vegas.
Isaac McNair-Seigler led the Cowboys offensively in game one, going 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored.
Jeremiah D'Arezzo,
Roman Basurto and
Lubby Marrujo each recorded two hits in the opener as Highlands finished with 13 hits. In game two,
Truett Ross paced the Cowboys with two hits and two RBI while
Alex Galvan added two hits and
Seth Galfano hit a two-run home run.
Game One - Colorado Mines 13, Highlands 11
New Mexico Highlands wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. Basurto crossed the plate on a Mines throwing error before
Tamden Webb-Tate drove in a run with a groundout. D'Arezzo followed with an RBI single and McNair-Seigler capped the inning with a two-run home run to give the Cowboys a quick 5–0 lead.
Colorado School of Mines responded in the third inning with a two-run double followed by an RBI triple to cut the lead to 5-3.
The Cowboys answered with another big inning in the bottom half of the third. McNair-Seigler delivered an RBI single before
Rory Swanson drew a bases-loaded walk. Basurto added an RBI single and
Ryan Rodriguez lifted a sacrifice fly to extend the Highlands advantage to 9-3.
After the Orediggers trimmed the lead with a solo home run in the fourth,
Nico Hilger answered with a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning to push the Cowboys ahead 11-4.
The Orediggers began their comeback in the fifth inning, scoring five runs to pull within 11-9. Colorado School of Mines added another run in the sixth before taking the lead in the seventh on a three-run double to make it 13-11.
Alex Gilliam was charged with the loss for Highlands.
Game Two - Colorado Mines 17, Highlands 5
Colorado School of Mines jumped in front early in game two, scoring three runs in the first inning before the Cowboys answered with two runs of their own.
Ryan Rodriguez drove in the first run of the inning with a single and Ross followed with an RBI double to make it 3-2.
The Orediggers broke the game open in the third inning with an eight-run frame to push the lead to 11-2.
New Mexico Highlands added a run in the bottom of the third when Ross singled home Rodriguez, but Colorado School of Mines continued to add insurance runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings.
Galfano provided the Cowboys' final highlight of the day in the seventh inning, launching a two-run home run.
Aidan Joyce took the loss for Highlands. The Cowboys finished with 12 hits in the second game.
The series concludes tomorrow at Brandt Field with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 pm.
