Las Vegas, New Mexico - The Colorado School of Mines used a fast start and steady offensive pressure to defeat New Mexico Highlands 17-8 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Brandt Field.
Colorado School of Mines (9-13, 6-2 RMAC) plated four runs in the opening inning and added three more in the second to seize early momentum. The Orediggers finished the afternoon with 19 hits and produced several innings with crooked numbers to pull away late.
New Mexico Highlands (5-17, 0-8 RMAC) answered in the bottom of the first when
Johnathan Davis scored on a sacrifice fly from
Truett Ross, but Mines responded with a two-run home run in the top half of the secondĀ inning to extend the lead.
The Cowboys chipped away throughout the game and made their biggest push in the sixth inning.
Jeremiah D'Arezzo sparked the rally with a two-run triple to right center, and
Nico Hilger followed with a two-run homer to cut the deficit to 8-7.
Colorado School of Mines answered immediately in the seventh with two runs to regain breathing room, then broke the game open with four runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth.
D'Arezzo had a big afternoon at the plate for New Mexico Highlands, finishing 3-for-3 with a home run, triple, four RBI and three runs scored. Hilger also collected three hits, including a home run, while driving in three runs. Davis scored twice and added a double for the Cowboys.
