UCCS Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader From Cowboys

Colorado Springs, Colorado - New Mexico Highlands University (6-23, 1-10 RMAC) generated consistent offense in both games but University of Colorado Colorado Springs (24-8-1, 13-1-1 RMAC) used timely scoring to complete a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon at Mountain Lion Park.

In game one, New Mexico Highlands tallied eight hits and built a 3-0 lead early behind an RBI double from Truett Ross and run-scoring efforts from Alex Galvan and Ryan Rodriguez. The Cowboys extended the lead to 4-2 in the sixth, but UCCS erupted for seven runs in the inning. New Mexico Highlands answered with two more runs in the seventh on RBI singles from Anthony Carrillo and Galvan, finishing with six runs on eight hits in a 9-6 setback.

Galvan led the offensive effort in the opener, going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, while Adrian Castenada added two hits and scored twice.

In game two, New Mexico Highlands continued to produce at the plate with seven hits and four runs. Johnathan Davis delivered the biggest swing of the day with a two-run home run in the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2. After UCCS responded with a four-run fifth, New Mexico Highlands again chipped away in the sixth, getting a sacrifice fly from Tony Leger and an RBI double from Tamden Webb-Tate to cut the deficit to 6-4.

Davis paced New Mexico Highlands in the nightcap, finishing 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, while Webb-Tate added an extra-base hit and RBI.

The series concludes Sunday with a nine-inning game scheduled for 12:00 pm first pitch.
