Colorado Springs, Colorado - UCCS erupted for 20 hits and five home runs to defeat New Mexico Highlands 17-5 in Sunday's RMAC series finale at Mountain Lion Park.
New Mexico Highlands falls to 6-24 overall and 1-11 in conference play, while UCCS improves to 25-8-1 overall and 14-1-1 in the RMAC.
The Mountain Lions jumped out early behind a three-run homer in the first inning and never looked back, adding solo shots in the second and fourth before breaking the game open with a four-run fifth inning.
New Mexico Highlands got on the board in the fifth on an RBI ground out from
Lubby Marrujo, then showed life in the seventh.
Ryan Rodriguez highlighted the inning with a solo home run, while
Rory Swanson (triple) and
Jeremiah D'Arezzo (double) each drove in runs to cut the deficit to 12-4.
The Cowboys added one more in the eighth, but UCCS answered with five runs in the bottom half, capped by a three-run home run to seal the 17-5 final.
Rodriguez led New Mexico Highlands, going 2-for-2 with a home run and an RBI.
New Mexico Highlands returns home to host MSU Denver in a four-game series beginning Thursday at 3:00 pm.
